Course Objective & Approach
This course is designed to provide an introduction to business with an emphasis on the fundamental managerial concepts and the respective roles that individuals fill in contributing to the success of a business. The Management Concepts course will provide ample opportunities for Scholars to realize connections between their degree requirements, major course of study and business. The course integrates the managerial concepts and generic competitive strategies utilized by firms. Management Concepts provides the essential foundation on which all other CBP courses will build. Throughout this course a variety of issues will be examined that will assist in equipping Scholars with an appreciation of different value systems and the ability to consider multiple perspectives when making business decisions. CBP Scholars will hone their communication skills both in writing and in speech and practice determining the most appropriate form, content and style depending upon the situation. This course will focus on the application of concepts to cases and projects in partnership with alumni, business and community leaders. Team projects and exercises will be used consistently throughout the course providing opportunities to learn how to work in groups effectively and consider the views of others to reach the best conclusion.
Topics examined will include the role of business in society, including ethical and legal responsibilities; business organization; competitive strategies; and management theory including organizational structures, decision making, conflict resolution and creative problem solving, collaborative teamwork, and organizational control.
Grading Components:
Quizzes
Quizzes are designed to evaluate effective comprehension of concepts. All quizzes will have similar format and will consist of essay questions based on chapter material, articles and/or related reading. The best preparation for the quizzes is completion of all assignments and active participation in class discussion. There will be a total of 3 quizzes given worth 100 points each. No makeup quizzes will be given unless extreme circumstances warrant it. There is no final exam in this course.
Attendance, Homework, and Assignments
This course requires a high level of participation. Many classes will include exercises designed to illustrate the theory in action. Special opportunities are arranged for Scholars to interact with business professionals through class visits, projects, workshops and Leadership Series events. Each Scholar’s learning experience is dependent upon effective preparation, completion of assignments, ability to share opinions in class discussion and in CBP-related events. Scholar’s attendance and participation will play key roles in determining the value of this course to each Scholar.
Class preparation and participation will count as a portion of your grade. Obviously, if you are absent from class it will be difficult to participate. Scholars should expect to be called upon to answer questions about the assignment or assigned reading each class meeting. Scholars uncomfortable speaking/participating in classshould discuss their difficulties meeting this requirement with the Instructor at the beginning of the course.
Since class contribution is so important to grasping course concepts, absenteeism, lack of punctuality or leaving early may negatively impact each Scholar’s grade. As in a professional setting, attendance and tardiness will be documented each class meeting. All assignments/projects are due at the beginning of class. No late work will be accepted. Scholar’s that are not in class cannot receive credit for the assignment.
Local Business Team Case
CBP Scholars will be assigned to teams and given the name of a local business along with contact information for key representative(s) of that business. Your group will be expected to facilitate a professional interview with personal from the business. Scholars are expected to leverage relevant chapter material and assigned readings to develop detailed interview questions. The key to this assignment is to apply concepts/theories from the text to your assigned business in order to demonstrate the concept/theory in action.
Cases Analyses
To help you practice applying what you learn, several case analyses will be assigned for discussion in class. Two cases will be turned in and graded – one will be completed in small groups and one will be an individual assignment. Grading will be based on your ability to succinctly identify relevant information from the case, apply concepts from the course, draw conclusions from your analysis, and identify solutions that effectively address the situation.
Organizational Profile
Scholars will select a business or organization to profile throughout the CBP core curriculum (Management Concepts, Financial Decision Making and Business Strategy). Each Scholar will select a separate publicly traded organization so that no two Scholars in the CBP program examine identical information. Throughout the CBP program, Scholars will examine this same organization from a different perspective that relates to course content. In this course, the firm’s culture, structure, social responsibility and management functions will be examined. It is imperative that enough information is available and Scholars attempt to contact the business far enough in advance to receive information critical to completing the assignment.
Scholars must complete the Firm Selection Form by the 3rdweek of class. Approval will be based on the Firm Selection Form and once granted will enable Scholars to begin working on conducting research for the Organizational Profile Project. A comprehensive analysis will be presented in writing along with a class discussion that synthesizes relevant course concepts.
Personal Code of Ethics
Scholar will be asked to develop their own Personal Code of Ethics. The Personal Code of Ethics should be considered a living document and will be revisited throughout the entire CBP curriculum. This is a critical component of the CBP Program. The Personal Code of Ethics takes the form of an essay that will be evaluated based on logical organization, thoughtful analysis and reflection, and supporting examples of how it might be applied in your day-to-day life.
