Concept Note
Background
The Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA) initiative was launched during COP21 in Paris on 7 December 2015 to serve as a global platform for enhanced dialogue, cooperation and coordinated action among geothermal industry, policy makers and geothermal stakeholders. The GGA aims at increasing the share of geothermal energy in the global energy mix through both geothermal power generation and direct use of geothermal heat. The GGA constituency has expanded to include close to 70 member countries and partner institutions across the globe.
With a view to unlocking geothermal investments on a global scale, the Alliance is joining efforts toprovide customised support to regions and countries with geothermal market potential, facilitate theexchange of insights and experience among key stakeholders in the geothermal energy value chain, and provide technical assistance, advisory and capacity buildingto foster an enabling environment for geothermal energy development.
Since the launch of the initiative, efforts have focussed on the operationalization of the Alliance. To this end, through an intensive consultative process within the GGA constituency, a concise plan of action for the Alliance (GGA Action Plan) has been finalized and endorsed by the GGA Members in May 2016. In order to identify specific activities under this Action Plan, the Alliancelaunched the first Call for Proposals of activities for the consideration of itsconstituency to provide implementation support. The 20 activity proposals received from the Members and Partners requested implementation support from the GGA constituency in a number of areas, including, technical assistance and capacity building in legal, technical and financial aspects, international outreach for partnership, and facilitating access to financing.
OBJECTIVE
This event constitutes the second annual meeting of the Alliance that will bring GGA Members and Partners together to take stock of the progress made in the implementation of the GGA initiative and exchange views on the way forward. It will also provide an opportunity tofurther catalyse engagement and implementation support from interested GGA Members and Partners in the implementation of the GGA activity proposals.
The meeting will also enable improved communication and coordination within the constituency and synergies to be created between the regional components and with other geothermal programmes. In this context, it will offer a platform for raising awareness on the geothermal energy projects under implementation in Comoros and St. Kitts and Nevis.
The event will be organised in the form of roundtable discussion among the Members and Partners of the Alliance.
