UK 101 - Financial Aid Information
Submission of FAFSA
Students will be able to file a 2017–18 FAFSA as early as Oct. 1, 2016, rather than beginning on Jan. 1, 2017. The earlier submission date will be a permanent change.
Beginning with the 2017–18 FAFSA, students will report income information from an earlier tax year. For example, on the 2017–18 FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) will report their 2015 income information, rather than their 2016 income information.
Enrollment Requirements
Attendance is required for receipt of federal and state aid. Please note that less than full-time enrollment may result in reduced aid eligibility. Also, reduction in hours after the payment of federal financial aid may affect a student’s future aid eligibility, if the student fails to show Satisfactory Academic Progress. Failure to attend module courses that are included in the number of hours enrolled for a term can result in aid being recalculated. The awards are valid only when a financial aid file is complete.
KEES Renewal
Students must maintain a GPA of at least a 2.5 for their first year and a 3.0 thereafter for automatic renewals. Students with a 2.5 to 2.99 receive full renewal if ‘on track to graduate’. Please visit the UK financial aid website to review the ‘on track to graduate’ guidelines. KEES is available for a total of eight semesters.
Verification
Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) is the primary point of contact for all document submission and pertinent information for verification. KHEAA can be reached via:
Phone: 855-272-8771; Web: www.kheaaverify.com; Email:
Approximately 30% of financial aid applicants are asked to verify information provided during the completion of the FAFSA. If you need clarification on any information requests made by KHEAA, or you simply have any questions regarding the process, our Financial Aid counselors are happy to assist you.
Satisfactory Academic Progress
Financial aid recipients are required to maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and must complete at least two-thirds (67%) of all cumulative credits attempted. If a recipient fails to complete their major within a timely manner, they could become ineligible for further financial aid. All requirements must be completed within 150 percent of the published length of their degree program. In addition, any recipient who fails to earn academic credit for two consecutive terms is not eligible for future financial aid without an approved SAP appeal.
Federal Rules Impact Financial Aid Eligibility for Repeat Courses
A student can only repeat a previously passed course once and still receive federal financial aid for the repeated coursework.
Federal Work-Study Program
FWS is a need-based program providing employment opportunities both on-campus and off-campus. Payments are made bi-weekly directly to the student, rather than being applied to the student’s university account. Students who decide not to use FWS awards are encouraged to inform the Student Financial Aid office as soon as possible so funds can be awarded to other students. Students not receiving FWS should contact Student Employment in the university’s Human Resources division. Student Employment job postings in UK's Online Employment System include a wide array of flexible student opportunities, both off- and on-campus.
Withdrawal
It is strongly recommended that any financial aid recipient planning to fully withdraw from the university, visit the Student Financial Aid office to discuss the consequences of said withdrawal.
In the event that a student does not properly notify the Registrar’s office of their withdrawal, the student could potentially remain enrolled after they halt attendance or participation in their courses. Those students who were awarded Title IV aid and received failing grades in all courses will be assessed at the end of the semester to determine their last date of participation. Recalculations will be made based on the determined date, or the midpoint of the semester, if no date can be determined.
