Volunteer Memorandum of Understanding
The University of Vermont Extension System and the Vermont Department of Education, through the Vermont Migrant Education Program (VMEP), seek to identify and enroll every eligible migratory student and child in the state who works in agriculture or is the child of a migratory agricultural worker. Once a student or child is enrolled, they are eligible to receive supplemental educational services.
Because of VMEP funding limitations, our staff can provide only supplemental education services, and we are therefore not able to meet many other needs of our families. Services such as community outreach and involvement, assistance with grocery shopping, shopping for home goods, weekly playgroups for families, assistance with medical appointments, and the like are beyond the capabilities of our regular program staff. VMEP volunteers can provide assistance in these areas and thus provide many useful services that clients would not otherwise receive.
Although VMEP recognizes the isolation that farm workers face and the temptation volunteers face to assist workers with transportation, the University of Vermont, UVM Extension and the VMEP do not insure, support or promote the transportation of farm workers by paid staff or volunteers. Nor does VMEP collect any information or documentation about the immigration status of its students or families.
To protect VMEP families and ensure their privacy, we expect that first contact with all volunteers will be made by the family seeking the volunteer services. Once you are established as a VMEP volunteer, individuals in your general area will be provided with your contact number. It is up to the individual to contact you first. Once an individual has made contact, volunteers can begin to work with the individual and assist with their needs.
If at any time you wish to discontinue your volunteer service with our program, you may simply call the VMEP Coordinator, Erin Shea, and she will have your name removed from our volunteer contact list.
