EXPLANATIONOFPROCEDURES FOR COLLECTING EVENTING STATISTICS ON FALLS

Followingthe FEI General Assembly2001andtheworldwideconsultation process, theEventing Committeeproduced a final report on “The futureof the Eventing”whichhasbeenacceptedand endorsedby theFEIBureauand National Federations. Thisreport includedtherecognitionof thenecessity fortheFEIto monitorand obtainreliabledata andstatistics.Itwasrecognisedthatan International overallRisk Managementprogramwasrequiredtoobtainthedataworldwide with thegoaltoensurecooperationand allowspreadand exchangeofknowledge to allcountriesinvolved inthe SportofEventing.
Research program
Thefirststep ofthisRisk ManagementProgramtobeimplementedhasbeentodevelop cooperationwiththeBritishbasedTransportResearchLaboratories(TRL)alreadyemployedby theGBRNF. ThechoiceofthespecificLaboratory wasbasedonthe alreadyimportantknowledgeabsorbedfromthe2-yearcooperationwiththeBritishEventing.
Thework plannedincooperationwith TRLrelated tothepreventionofaccidents basedonanalysisof thedata of ALLfallsof horseand riderand identification ofparticular precipitation or contributoryfactorsto determine future Risk Management initiatives withinthe sport.

TheFEIwill produceareportoftheresultsofthisstudy attheendofeachyear.

To continue the collecting of consistentand credible data the FEIEventing Committee has developedtogether withTRLacommonincidentformto beusedat all International eventsasof2002.TheseformsaretobereturnedtotheFEIfor analysisasthenumbersanddifferentclimaticconditions as well as other informationareessential asbasisof this research.
TechnicalDelegateResponsibility
FEITechnicalDelegatesreceiveall thenecessaryformstoproceedwiththis collection ofdatatogether with the normalTD form also available on the FEI website under Official/Eventing/Forms and Download. These forms include:
- RegularTD formon the organisation ofevent.
- FEI Eventing Fall form – tobedistributedto fence judges after TD explanationonimportanceonfillinginformforallfalls.Allboxesofthe fallreport formneedto be completed for validdata.
- FenceDescriptionforms-theTDwillberequestedtoensurethattheCourseDesigneroftheeventcompletesaformspecifyingfencetype,and inwhatorder on thecourse the fence is situated and its relationto bends.
The TDwillberesponsibleforensuring thatall theformsarecompletedand collectedand sentback totheFEIasquickly aspossibleafter thecompletionof the event according to Article 515.3.7 of Eventing Rules.
NationalFederationcontribution
All NFs involved in Eventing are requested to collect data for all National Eventing competitions in order to obtain the maximum of statistics on falls to validate the Risk management program of the sport of Eventing. The National statistics are presented during the annual National Safety Officers Seminar.
The collection of theEventing fall datais only one partof the Eventing Committee Risk Management Program. InadditiontheFEIEventing Databasehas been developed for the benefitofallNFs,Organiserand riders. The Risk Management Policy and Action plan implemented in 2009 is available on the FEI website under Eventing / Risk Management.
The FEIrealisesthat this programwilldemandmuchextra effortfromall involvedinthesport.However, Eventingisawonderful sport withitsownspecialrequirements and if allactorscan contribute to making it saferand moreacceptabletothegeneral publicitwillbeastepintherightdirectionforthe future.
