Ch 10 – Data Analysis and Probability
*Probability sections 10-5 to 10-8 are not part of state standards, BUT I think we should teach it.
Good Intro Activity for the the Chapter p. 676 – 677
10-1: Organizing and Displaying Data
-Exploration is easy, but might be a good way to get started with this concept.
-Think and Discuss, p. 682, is a good way to organize different graph types into their notes.
10-2: Frequency and Histograms
-Exploration is okay
-Reaching All Learners might be fun with candy instead of fake coins.
-be sure students can state the difference between bar graphs and histograms – this is included in the Think and Discuss, p. 689
10-3: Data Distributions
-This lesson introduces box and whiskers plots and outliers, however, doesn’t have any problems that include outliers. Will need to supplement with own data sets.
-Think and Discuss #2 is a good way to organize definitions of mean, median, and mode.
-Would be fun to do some activity here where you’re actually generating data for students to find mean, median, mode. (Kim D has an M&M activity that might work to review 10-1 to 10-3).
10-3 Tech Lab: includes how to make Box & Whiskers plot on a graphing calculator. Would be good to integrate technology into curriculum.
10-4: Misleading Graphs and Statistics
-Exploration is good.
-Think and Discuss is good.
-Might be able to add an activity where students find real graphs/statistics (from magazines or newspapers) and analyze validity.
10-1 to 10-4 Quiz (or if we are not going any further with this chapter, it would be the Ch 10 exam).
10-5 to 10-8: Probability
-Lots of vocab in this part of the chapter. Might want to provide students with a vocab sheet.
10-5: Experimental Probability
-This lesson introduces experimental probability, but there are no experiments for kids to DO (except for p. 712 Algebra Lab). Should supplement with some activities.
-Start lesson with Algebra Lab (p. 712) – can use a dice or pieces of paper with the letters C, I, N, E, M, A on them.
10-5 Tech Lab might be nice to try if you have time, but not essential.
10-6: Theoretical Probability
-Exploration is simple, but might be nice to introduce difference between experimental and theoretical probability.
-Be sure students understand the “Caution” on p. 720.
-Students struggle with concept of odds. Is this something that we want to teach? If so, Know-It-Note on p. 722 is good.
10-7: Independent & Dependent Events
-Good Exploration
-Good Motivate, p. 726
-Know-It-Note on p. 727 & 729 need to be in their notes
-10-7 Reading Strategies worksheet has a good compare and contrast of independent and dependent events.
-10-7 Algebra Lab is good, however, don’t see compound events again anywhere.
BEFORE 10-8, add in the Ice Cream Activity from Pre-Calc book
10-8: Combinations & Permutations
-Taught this last year in the piloting process and students really struggled with it as it is presented in the Holt text. Do we teach them the formulas?
-Exploration is good (review tree diagrams)
-Motivate is good.
-Think and Discuss on p. 739 has a good graphic organizer to distinguish between counting principle, permutations, and combinations.
10-5 to 10-8 Quiz
