NEONP MEETING MINUTES
May 9th, 2015
IN ATTENDANCE: Anita Groeschke, Theresa Gurtz, Dodie Nelson, Laura Bobrowski, Betty Pettit, Teresa Lagerlof, Latasha Stergis, Kathy Walsh, Chris Suchan, Christine Armstrong.
PROGRAM: Presentation by Karen Konrad, MSN, Malone University of her Graduate thesis: Attitudes and Beliefs of Undergraduate Nursing Students about Transgender Individuals.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Dodie Nelson reported that Karen Brenner has decided to step down as President Elect due to personal reasons. At which time it was proposed that a new President be elected for 2016. Anita Groeshcke was nominated by Betty Pettit and seconded by Christine Armstrong. A vote was taken at that time by NEONP members present and Anita Groeschke was elected.
PRESIDENT ELECT REPORT: Karen Brenner stepped down due to personal reasons and Anita Groeshcke was nominated as the 2016 President Elect.
TREASURER REPORT: Chris Suchan reported that the total cost of the conference was $13,961 of which $3,000 was spent on flyers and stamps. There were 211 attendees and 14 vendors. She also thanked all NEONP members for their help with the conference.
SECRETARY REPORT: Christine Armstrong Meeting minutes are up to date.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:.
CONFERENCE COMMITTEE: Chris Suchan/Karen Brenner, co-chair.
Chris Suchan/Gwen Smith to co-chair 2016 conference.
Laura Bobrowski reported the conference attendee’s evaluations. Out of 200 evaluations: The Wilderness Medicine and Women’s Health Presentations were tied for favorable reviews. 171 thought conference content was just right and 11 thought the presentations were too basic. Suggestions for topics for next years Conference included: Endocrine topics such as thyroid, DM 2, hypogonadism; Respiratory topics such as COPD and ARDS; ENT topics such as allergies and sinusitis. Also suggested were topics in psych and cardiology. Most common complaints were that the room was too crowded and too cold. In general attendees were glad that 5 out of the 6 CEU’s were pharmacology hours.
Discussion on flow of buffet traffic as well as hotel’s willingness to accommodate our number of attendees.
WEBSITE COMMITTEE: Lucy Thomas, chair. Not in attendance d/t illness.
Steve has membership and will continue to advertise jobs. It was suggested that we resume to NEONP news letter as away to attract new members and focus on what is new in legislation
PROGRAMS COMMITTEE: Lucy Thomas, chair. Not in attendance d/t illness. Any and all suggestions for a program for the September meeting will be greatly appreciated.
Suggestions for presenters on genotyping were brought forward by Dodie Nelson and Christine Armstrong, with both agreeing to try and secure a speaker of their acquaintance.
AWARDS COMMITTEE: Pat Summers/Lenore Posedly, co-chair. Pat Summers reported that we are actively seeking applicants for the 2015 scholarship awards.
And that Betty Pettit was awarded the NP of the year award at the Conference.
TRANSITIONS TO PRACTICE COMMITTEE: Christine Armstrong, chair. Reported that NP2B offered to sponsor our 2016 seminar.
LEGISLATIVE-OAAPN/AAPN REPORT: Teresa Lagerlof, chair. Terry reported that the push for full practice authority continues. 19 states have full practice authority. Ohio was the last state to get prescriptive authority. The RAND study that OAAPN paid for was instrumental in getting the APRN Modernization Bill drafted. There still remains a large amount of anxiety in the public and medicine concerning granting NP’s full practice authority. We must overcome that by education to the public on the NP’s role in health care.
OLD BUSINESS: Laura Bobrowski reported that NEONP collected $260 and 600 personal hygiene items for Care Alliance in Lucy Thomas name.
NEW BUSINESS: Anita Groeschke reported that she is assisting ISHA to present an essential oils class for certification and CEU’s on June 26th. 1st class is 20 hours, 2nd and 3rd classes are 16 hours each.
There is a push on the Federal level to make it legal for NP’s to sign 485’s as reported by the AANP.
There is an excellent conference coming up at the Marriot by Rich Kasmer who is a Pharm D and an attorney. It is an all day CME that covers OARRS and Narcotics.
