WORD THEORY HANDOUT (based on SKYDRIVE)
- Word web app
- Word Web App is a limited version of Word, enabling you to edit,format, and share a document online.
- Word Web App is free and accessible when you sign in to or create a SkyDrive account.
- When you sign into SkyDrive you can click a previously saved Word document to open it or create a new one.
- The Word Window
- One of the basic features of Word is the Ribbon, which enables you to create, modify, and enhance documents.
- There is a title bar which indicates the file name of the current document and includes Windows control buttons to access Word Help.
- At the bottom of the Word window is the status bar which keeps you apprised of information in your document such as, word and page count, and your current position.
- Select text to edit
- To select one word- Double click the word.
- To select one line of text- Place the mouse pointer at the left of the line, in the margin area. When the mouse changes to right pointing arrow, click to select the line.
- To select entire document- Press and hold Ctrl while you press A on the keyboard.
- Find and Replace
- Search for the text you would like to change and replace it with something else.
- Headers and Footers
- The header consists of one or more lines of text at the top of each page.
- The footer displays at the bottom of each page.
- Page Break
- Marks the point at which one page ends and the next page begins.
- Margins
- A margin is the area of blank space that displays to the left, right, top, and bottom of a document, between the text and the edge of the page.
- Page Orientation
- There are two orientation options: portrait and landscape.
- Reviewing a document
- A word that is considered misspelled is underlined with a red wavy line.
- To check an entire document click the Review tab and click Spelling & Grammar.
- Applying Fonts
- A font is a combination of typeface and type style.
- Clear Formatting
- To remove all formatting from the selected text you can use the Clear All Formatting tool in the Font group on the Home tab.
- Paragraph alignment
- There are four alignment options: Align Left – Center – Align Right and Justify.
- Justify alignment spreads text evenly between the left and right margins so that text begins at the left margin and ends uniformly at the right margin.
- Paragraph Spacing
- Paragraph spacing is the amount of space between paragraphs.
- Line spacing
- Line spacing is the amount of space between lines.
- Indents
- An indent is a setting associated with how part of a paragraph is distanced from one or more margins.
- Left indent is indenting an entire paragraph from the left margin.
- Right indent is indenting an entire paragraph from the right margin.
- Shading
- Shading is a background color that appears behind text in a paragraph, a page, or a table.
- Tables
- A table is a grid of columns and rows that organizes data.
- The intersection of row and column is a cell. The cell is where you type data.
