1. HEAD LICE

Health experts tell us that head lice spreads easily, especially when people are in close contact and are very common among school-aged children and children attending daycare. We remind parents to regularly check your child/ren for head lice and strongly recommend that girl’s hair be kept up (pony tail, braid, etc.) We do have information at the office highlighting the importance of regular checks and proper treatment procedures. A booklet entitled ‘Managing Head Lice at Home’ promotes the practices of checking weekly, treating properly, and letting your school know. The booklet is also available on the District website at ALLERGY ALERT

Please be aware that we have students and staff with SEVERE allergies to EGGS, STRAWBERRIES,KIWI,FEATHERS, NUTS, PEANUTS, TRACES OF NUTS, ALL TYPES OF FISH, including SHELLFISH. Please be mindful when packing your child’s recess/lunch. (e.g. Please do not send along food that has been deep fried in oil which has been used for fish.)* Also, please investigate all food products before sending them to school as we learned last year that some meat subs may contain fish!

3. HERITAGE FAIR – GR. 4 CLASS

(PLEASE NOTE CHANGE)

This year we have decided to integrate our heritage fair into the Gr. 4 Social Studies curriculum. Students in other grades can still create a project, if they wish, but it is not mandatory. Our Heritage Fair will take place on Monday, March 26, 2018. Three finalists will be selected from ALL entriesto represent St. Peter’s at the NLESD’s Heritage Fair at Amalgamated Academy on May 4th and 5th.

This years’ theme is “Lessons From Our Past Shaping Our Future”.

Students may explore their own childhoods in relationship to those of parents/grandparents, or other relatives. They may wish to focus on entertainment (culture, food, games, music, parades, traditions, etc.), school life, a traditional way of life, traditional jobs or roles, or church and/or community influences. Students might consider researching an historical event or period such as The Great War, The Great Depression, The Second World War, the Cod Moratorium, Newfoundland Joining Confederation, and so forth. In this case, artifacts could be used, research could be developed, and student presentations could be enriched by both.

Other ideas include:

•Service and sacrifice related toIndustry – Fishing – Logging – Mining – Oil

•Service and sacrifice related tofamily and community – Families helping one another in difficult times – Merchants – Churches – Social Organizations – Newcomers

•Service and sacrifice related tothe military – Early Wars – First World War – Second World War – Recent

•How has service and sacrifice in any of these areas helped to shape our Culture? – Aboriginal people led the way in showing service helping the first Europeans – Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are noted for their work ethic – Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are noted for their willingness to help others - Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have strong ties to their communities and families – Newcomers are helping to shape Newfoundland and Labrador culture into a more diverse and rich culture

Students may present their findings in any method of their choice - table top presentation, audio, video, performance, log, diary, music, art, etc.

Although we are several weeks away, students should begin to plan out their project and not wait until the last week. 4. PANCAKE DAY

Please note that on Tuesday, February 13, all students and staff will enjoy a pancake breakfast. Therefore, there will be no regular breakfast program on this day.

5. GRADE 9 ORIENTATION AT ASCENSION

Our Grade 9 students/parents/guardians are informed that there will be a meeting at Ascension on Wednesday, February 21st/18 at 7:00 p.m. regarding orientation for Level I.

6. KINDERSTART SESSION

Our Kinderstart session will take place Friday, February 9th; therefore, there will be no school for Kindergarten students on this day.

7. JANEWAY DAY /P.J. Day

On Wednesday, February 14th, 2018, ‘Janeway Day’ will be held at St. Peter’s. All students and staff are encouraged to wear their P.J.’s and are asked to donate the equivalency of their recess to the Janeway. Please support!!

8. VALENTINE’S DAY

NLES District, through both its vision and mission statements, articulates a concern for a socially just environment. Similar to Halloween and Christmas, please be reminded that parents/guardians are asked not to supply food or loot bags for students during this day. If you wish to send a valentine for each student that will be fine. Please ”do not” attach a chocolate, candy, pencil, eraser, etc. to the valentine. Each year we have a number of parents who get concerned about some of the things that get distributed and we often have children who get upset if they do not have treats to give out. If you find it necessary to deliver treats to special friends, please do so after school hours.

Our Breakfast Program always welcomes donations (monetary or food items). If you wish to send along a food item for the breakfast program please check with the school beforehand. With regards to our Valentines parties on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, we are asking parents/guardians to send along a snack (for your child only) and we encourage this snack to be of nutritional value.

9. EDUCATION / ‘STAFF APPRECIATION’WEEK

During the week of February 12th – 16th we will be celebrating both Education and Staff Appreciation Week here at St. Peter’s. Please see list of events below:

10. YEARBOOK 2017/2018

Please find attached, information regarding our yearbook for 2017/2018. The yearbooks will arrive in the fall of 2018 and will be distributed at that time. Please keep in mind the deadline to order is March 23, 2018.

11. ‘SCENT FREE’ ENVIRONMENT

POLICY

REMINDER - ALL BUILDINGS UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF ‘NLESD’ ARE SCENT FREE.

12. PIT ROAD BUS STOP

We are kindly asking parents/guardians at the Pit Road bus stop to please park on either Pit Road or the parking lot across from Pit Road, if available, when loading and unloading of the bus. This is one of our largest bus stops, and we want children to enter and exit the bus safely and the bus driver to be able to see the kids at all times. Please see the attached diagram for more details. When vehicles are parked on the Main Road, children come and go from various points, making the danger-zone become larger and the possibility of the bus driver not being able to see everyone. We thank you for your understanding.

13. PLAYGROUND FUNDRAISER

As you are aware, ALL families were given 4 tickets to try and sell for our upcoming fundraiser (March Calendar Draw). We are asking everyone to put their best effort forward and try and sell their tickets, if possible. (However, please keep in mind that we cannot take orders through Facebook). We do have over 400 tickets remaining at school and we would certainly appreciate your support in re-vitalizing the Pinch Road Playground. Tickets can also be purchased at Clarke’s Country Corner, Mya’s Superette, Parsons Convenience & Gas Bar, UIC Pharmacy and here at the school.

As a community based school we really need everybody’s support to help us revitalize the playground so as to provide our students with a safe place to play both during school related events, as well as with family and friends.

14. MID-WINTER BREAK

Please be informed that there will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, February 16th and Monday, February 19th due to a Mid-Winter Break. School will resume on Tuesday, February 20th at regular time and it will be Day 5 on the school schedule.
