New Newsletter Format
As part of our continuing communications upgrade with the school community we are launching our newly updated newsletter format. We hope you enjoy the new format, and we look forward to providing greater amount of content from the classrooms, community information on a regular basis.
Bunning’s Sausage Sizzle
The Bunning’s Sausage sizzle was a great success! We would like to thank all those wonderful parents who helped on the day and are now sworn of sausage for some time. The amount raised was $1700.00
School Camp
The camp was; the teachers and the kids were having a great time. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Greame for his work organising the camp; great effort. Also along with Graeme I would like to thank Angela, Laura, Mulynda, Caitlyn and Alana (pre-service teacher) who all gave their time. Without the staff’s commitment to the kids, activities like these just could not go ahead.
Foundation (Prep) Enrolment Forms
Reminder; to parents enrolling a prep child for 2017, please present the enrolment form along with your child’s birth certificate and Immunisation form to the office before the end of this term. If you have returned your form please disregard this reminder.
TiqbizIMPROVED COMMUNICATION WITH TIQBIZ!
We have received great feedback from parents on the Tiqbiz communications platform; which is excellent to hear. There have been requests to have the newsletter linked to Tiqbiz directly. We are working with both Tiqbiz and the Website provider to have this link created. We understand Tiqbiz is rolling out software upgrades which need to be tested before we can create the link without glitches to the connection. We understand that the linking of the newsletter should happen by the end of term three.

Community Reminders
Instrumental music lessons update
We now have two teachers offering instrumental music lessons during school hours: Rachel teaches piano/keyboard on Mondays (fully booked) and Kyra teaches piano/keyboard and ukulele on Wednesdays. Kyra is nearly fully booked for Wednesdays but can take on another day if there are further enrolments. A flier with further information on what Kyra offers is attached to this newsletter.
Want to see new instruments offered? Music lesson working-group meeting next Thursday; 25th August, 9.15am in the After-care room.
Everyone with an interest in how instrumental music lessons are offered at Newlands is invited to come along to discuss the next steps regarding inviting new service-providers to offer lessons at the school during or after school hours. Responses to the music lesson survey (distributed earlier this year) showed that quite a few families are interested in lessons for guitar and drums. If you can’t come along but want to contribute your views please contact Nina ( or 0400123336). Thanks!
HAIR LICE –NITSThat Scourge is still with us!
The problem with nits is that, it becomeseverybody’s problem! It is a financial problem as well as an unnecessary waste of time dealing with nits. We really do need all families to combat the problem so that we can achieve a ‘NIT FREE ZONE’. The problem has nothing to do with cleanliness, we know that!
The issue is, families need to, on a weekly basis check their children’s hair and deal with the problem immediately. Children with long hair need to have it tied back to reduce and minimise contact with other student’s hair regardless of the student’s particular preference; this is community problem.
At the beginning of term four we will be checking students for hair lice (nits). If we find students with nits we will be sending them home immediately for treatment. Children on return to school will be checked and cleared to return to the classroom. If they still have hair lice on return they will be sent home again for further treatment.
SUPPORT OUR NEWLANDS COMEDY GALA PERFORMERS!
Just a couple of weeks ago, some fabulous, talented people gave up their time and energies to help us raise some serious cash for the school. If you loved the Newlands Comedy Gala here’s your chance to show our performers a little love, and enjoy another great local show with your kids!
Candy B will be putting on her hip hop show for kids at the Coburg Carnivale in the school holidays. You should definitely check it out.

Grade 6 Incinerator Art Gallery Excursion
The Grade 6’s have been lucky enough to be a part of an amazing SOLE (Self Organization Learning Environment) experience with 2 other primary schools: Bell Vue Primary School and Aberfeldie Primary School. This week they took part in the follow up session from last term.
We explored the ideas behind a range of Abstract Art on display at the Incinerator Gallery in Moonee Ponds. Amy (Art Curator) helped guide as towards a deeper understanding of Abstract Art as we all developed an answer to the big question: What is Art?
Afterwards we had a chance to make our own Abstract Art using a variety of resources. Some of them require you to look beyond the picture, and think upon a deeper level.
Overall it was a great experience interacting with students from other schools, exploring art and developing our inquisitive skills.
CYC Phillip Island Adventure Resort
What an amazing three days away. Phillip Island put on a fantastic show for Newlands Primary School, Grades 3 – 6. There was laughter, dancing, tears, excitement and exhaustion, all rolled into one experience.
Whilst on camp we enjoyed a wide range of activities including: watching the adorable Little Penguins climbing up the beach and into their burrows; Beachcombing with the local rangers in the pouring rain, looking for interesting marine life; The amazing Giant Swing, with many of us reaching the 18 Club (well done Mr Dudgeon); The Flying Foxes; Canoeing; The highly energetic Pajama Disco and many, many more fun times.
A, big thanks to all of the teachers that helped make it such a wonderful experience, and of course a massive thanks to all of the students. With next year’s camp already in mind, I’m sure that we’ll all get as much rest as possible before hand.
