How to Help Your Student Find an Expert

We are winding down our research process for our Day of Unlimited Possibilities and one of the final steps for most students is to find an outside expert to ask a few questions to as a primary source. We have advertised for these experts through our TARGET Facebook page and through even my own personal page and some students have been able to make a connection through that media. Most, however, will need your help in finding an expert to talk to, but where do you start? Here are a few ideas to get you going!

  1. Think about your own circle of family, friends, and coworkers. One of them may have expertise in the field your child is researching and be willing to answer some questions.
  2. Centers of education, such as schools and Universities are usually always willing to help with answering student questions and often have a department for many of the student topics. Call that department and ask if one of the professors or graduate students would be willing to talk or meet with your student.
  3. Museums, zoos, and aquariums are great places to check with as they are all about outreach and educating the public!
  4. Local businesses that deal with the topic of research are usually a great place to try as well. For example, if your child is researching baking, try talking to the local bakery. If they are researching engines, try your local mechanic shop.

Your student has already prepared a question sheet and is ready to make contact at any time with their expert. If you are able to set up an interview, just let your child know to bring their question sheet home and then they can return to TARGET with their answers. Thank you for your help and support in helping your child to connect with an expert in their field of research! On the next page, you will find a list of topics. If you are an expert in any of these fields and are willing to help another student, please let me know. Thank you!
