Activity Sheet 1

The Skeletal System – Dictagloss

The bones inside your body are joined together to form the skeleton. There are 206 bones in the body. Our skeleton is very important because it does three major jobs. Firstly it gives us the shape that we have. Without bones you would be a blob on the floor. Secondly the skeleton protects the organs in your body like your brain, heart and lungs. Thirdly the skeleton helps you to move because muscles are joined onto your bones.

The bones in your head are together called the skull. The skull sits on top of the spine. The spine is made of 26 small ring shaped bones called vertebrae that are all joined together. Also joined to the spine is the rib cage. There are 12 pairs of ribs that curve around from your spine to the front part of your body called the chest. The spine runs all the way down your back. At the base of the spine is the pelvis. The pelvis is shaped like a bowl and helps to support the spine. Joined to the pelvis are your leg bones. The top leg bone is called the femur and it is the longest, heaviest and strongest bone in your body.

The Skeletal System – Investigating Technical Language

The skeleton is the framework for your body. The bones are like the beams inside a building and all of our organs, muscles and skin are organised around it. Our skeleton is very important because it does three major jobs. Firstly it gives us the shape that we have. Without bones you would be a blob on the floor. Secondly the skeleton protects the organs in your body. Thirdly the skeleton helps you to move because muscles are joined onto your bones.

The bones in your head are together called the skull. The skull protects the brain and sits on top of the spine. The spine which runs all the way down your back is made of 26 small ring shaped bones called vertebrae that are all joined together. The spine allows you to twist and bend and holds your body upright. It also protects the spinal cord. This is a large bundle of nerves that sends information from the brain to the rest of your body. The rib cage is also joined to the spine. There are 12 pairs of ribs that curve around from your spine to the front part of your body called the chest. The part where they meet at the chest is called the sternum. The rib cage protects the heart, lungs and liver.

At the base of the spine is the pelvis. The pelvis is shaped like a bowl and helps to support the spine. It also protects our digestive organs. Joined to the pelvis are your leg bones. The top leg bone is called the femur and it is the longest, heaviest and strongest bone in your body.
