24Blue Debut – Student Session
1. Case; Power Cord· Comes with three prong, see the 24Blue Support Team if you need a 2 prong
· It is OK to close the lid while it is on – this is a good way to conserve energy while you are not using the computer during a class
· When you go home tonight, plug the computer in and let it fully charge (the light on the plug in will be green and the battery will say 100%)
· Once a month, drain the battery completely and then charge
· A good practice is to charge every night but use without the power cord at school; the battery works better if it is not plugged in all the time
· Power cable is magnetic; if the computer falls accidently, the power cable will unplug
· Inside the case is a basic Macbook guide for your use
2. Turn on – Login
· Locate the On/Off button – press once – do not hold down
· You must login at school AND at home – this establishes a link to your files
· Your login is first three letters of your last name and the first three letters of your first name
· The password is jays – it will make you change it - write it on your help sheet; remember – do not share this login and password with anyone else!!!
3. Mouse; Trackpad; Keyboard; Ports
· Mouse movement is accomplished with the trackpad – one finger on the trackpad moves the cursor, the thumb clicks the mouse; other movement preferences are set using System Preferences under the Apple Menu – ALLOW STUDENTS time to go to the Apple menu, go to System Preferences and change the mouse settings (tap to click, two fingers secondary click, two finger scroll, etc) - ALLOW students to try, two finger click (right click) and two finger scroll when the opportunity arrives
· Keyboard – fn, control, option, command, top row for sound, brightness, other shortcuts
· Ports – shown on your help sheet; USB/Firewire – do not leave things plugged in there if they are not in use (drains power; cases not built to hold peripheral devices plugged in such as jump drive or mouse)
· You can add printers, cameras, USB extender, etc. to your computer – make sure you eject correctly by dragging the icon on the desktop to the trash or selecting icon and pressing the eject button, or right click on icon and eject
4. Desktop Tour – Apple, Dock, , HD, Top Right, Saving
· Apple – already saw System Preferences, also use to shut down, other pull down menus you will learn about next week
· Dock – applications you might use most often, there are way more applications on your computer, these are shortcuts to the most popular; start from left to right and name each icon; explain how moving mouse over will show you the name; clicking on one will open it; point out the blue dot under the applications currently in use
· HD – All Applications, where you will save; see peripherals, etc. – HAVE students double-click to open this up and show how this works
· Top Right Corner – home (used at school, we explain next week), wireless (explain later), sound, battery (have students right click and change display to %), day and time, spotlight (we explain next week)
· Saving – save files to the hard drive, create folders there to organize; all files like word processing, spreadsheets, etc will be backed up to the server at school; all music, photos, movies will NOT – you must back up using a USB or CD or some other method. REMEMBER – if your computer must be reformatted, you will lose music, photo, and movie content unless you personally backup to your own USB, CD, or whatever
5. Do, Avoid, Never AND other reminders
· Refer to your handout from this room and also the one given at the first meeting
· It is your responsibility to know what you can and cannot do
· It is your responsibility to know how to care for your Macbook
6. Wireless
· Connection at Pierce High School should be easy; if you have a lot of difficulty, please see the 24Blue Support Team
· Connection at home – you DO NOT need wireless to operate your Macbook, you can use the Ethernet cable connected to your DSL
· Your Macbook will NOT connect to dial up
· You DO NOT have to connect to the Internet at home; you can do all the applications on your laptop that are not Internet dependent
· REMEMBER – if you choose to do wireless at home, protect your connection with a password; if you leave it open, you are opening yourself up to hackers
7. Shut Down; Sleep; Carrying
· Shut Down – Apple Menu – shut down; REMEMBER – between classes you can “close the lid” and the computer will be fine
· Sleep – This mode preserves battery power; to wake up press a key, press the power key, or move a finger over the trackpad
· Carrying – putting away your computer is important – Help students wrap the cable, place in the netting, place the computer in the case with the apple logo facing away from the power/cables
· REMIND students – the computer case is NOT a backpack, you should not stuff books, etc in the case. The help guide that is in there and the sheet of paper given to you tonight will be OK but nothing else!!!
FINAL REMINDERS:
1. Plug in the computer when you get home and let charge overnight – you can use the computer during this time but remember to keep it plugged in until it is fully charged
2. Let the battery go dead completely once a month
3. Use the Unfreeze tips found on your help page or get from the 24Blue link on the Pierce Public School web site
4. GAGGLE will be gone on the first day of school. You have one week to move your mail and let people know you will no longer have this account.
5. Remember to read through the information given tonight. It is YOUR responsibility to take of this computer and return it at the end of the year in SUPER condition.
