Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the steel manufacturing sector.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: hot rolling equipment; hot rolling process; and the measurement of performance of hot rolling systems.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of hot rolling equipment.
Evidence requirements
1.1 The characteristics of the components of a hot rolling mill are described in terms of their function, operation, and application.
Range components include but are not limited to – furnaces, rolls, cooling, material handling, material identification.
1.2 Service support systems are explained in terms of the function and inter-relationship with each other.
Range service support systems include but are not limited to – electrical, control, data capture, water, lubrication.
1.3 The types, characteristics, and function of the refractories utilised in reheat furnaces are described in terms of company documentation.
1.4 Support equipment is described in terms of the function and operation of each piece of equipment.
Range support equipment includes but is not limited to – roll turning, descalers, guides, shears.
1.5 The types and function of hot rolling consumables is described in terms of company documentation.
Range consumables include but are not limited to – roll lubricants, strapping, labelling.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of hot rolling processes.
Evidence requirements
2.1 The process of the physical modification of steel is explained in terms of company documentation.
Range process includes but is not limited to – reheating, rolling, cooling, material handling.
Outcome 3
Demonstrate knowledge of the measurement of performance of hot rolling systems.
Evidence requirements
3.1 The application and implications of performance indicators are identified and described in terms of company documentation.
Range performance indicators may include but are not limited to – tonnes/man-hr, prime by first intent, utilisation, reliability, yield;
evidence of three is required.
3.2 The identity, application, and effect of quality control factors for hot rolling are described in terms of company documentation.
Range quality control factors include but are not limited to – physical properties, dimensions, surface finish.
