WS/FCS Middle School World Languages

·  6th + 7th + 8th Grade language courses = high school Level 1 course, so students can enter 9th grade in Level 2 and can receive high school credit for Level 1 (based on final grade in the 8th grade course)

o  This means that students need to start middle school language in 6th grade because it is a sequence of courses – they should not enter the sequence after 6th grade

·  Students can receive Level 1 credit for Spanish, French, Spanish for Native Speakers, Latin, German, and Chinese (depending upon the schools' offerings)

o  List of courses by school is below

·  Spanish for Native Speakers (SNS) is designed to follow the same sequence as the other middle school language courses

o  6th + 7th + 8th grade = high school Level 1 course

o  Is designed for native/heritage speakers of Spanish

o  SNS DOES meet the high school foreign language requirement for graduation

o  Just as with other middle school courses, students can get a high school credit for successful completion of the 3 yr sequence in middle school

o  SNS allows students access to upper level/AP courses

High School Level 1 credit

·  Must pass the 8th grade course with a C or higher

·  8th grade test is 20% of the final course grade

·  Level 1 credit is on the high school transcript

·  Course grade is not a part of the high school GPA

·  Can take Level 2 in high school and be finished with minimum college entrance requirement (recommended to take more courses, but not required)

·  Two year college entrance minimum requirement does not have to all be completed at the high school

·  Not required to take Level 3 if earn Level 1 credit in middle school

·  Not required to take Level 2 as a result of receiving Level 1 credit, but is highly recommended (no need to repeat a course when students were successful)
