Course Description: Geometry is a college-prep Common Core standards-based course. It is designed to introduce you to the concepts of Euclidean Geometry, help you develop and apply deductive reasoning skills, and prepare you for Algebra 2. You will also learn how to analyze problems, select the most appropriate solving methods, and write coherent solutions to Common Core Performance Tasks.
To be successful in this class, you need to attend class regularly, maintain a positive attitude, and consistently demonstrate good work habits. You need to be cooperative and accept responsibility for your learning, ask questions, and get extra help as needed.
Required Materials: lined notebook paper, #2 pencil with eraser (no tests in pen), color pens/ highlighters,compass, ruler, and scientific calculator every day (no graphing calculators; suggested TI- 30XS).
Math Binder or Section: You will need a math binder or section with 3 tabs labeled; notes, homework, and Tests/ Quizzes. There will be a lot of papers to keep organized this year and keeping them organized will be imperative to your success in this class.
Grade Categories and Weights:
Tests, quizzes, projects, quarter and semester assessments = 75% of grade
Homework and Classwork= 25%
Grading Scale:A 90-100%B 80-89%C 70-79%
D 60-69%F 0-59%
Homework/Class Work: Homework will be assigned daily and due the following day unless otherwise specified. Late work must be done by Friday of the week it was assigned.
Make-up Work: It is your responsibility to get notes and homework when you miss class, and catch up as quickly as possible. Make-up work will receive full-credit if it is complete and turned in no later than the day packets are due. Assignments and other materials will be posted on Ms. Thayer’s school web page at vhstigers.org. If you know you will be absent, you should request assignments as far in advance as possible, and try to be caught up with the class upon your return. No credit will be given for homework missed due to truancy. You need to stay caught up with the class and turn in homework on time if you are absent due to sports, field trips, or school activities.
Testing Policy: You are expected to be in class and prepared for quizzes and scheduled tests. If you are absent only on the review day(s) for a test, you will be expected to take the test on the test day. If you are absent (excused) on the day of the test, you must be prepared to take the test by the following Friday on your own time, any tests not made-up by this time will receive a zero. If your absence is unexcused and you did not notify Ms. Thayer prior to your absence, or if you are absent on a regular basis on test days, your test grade may be lowered by one letter grade. It is your responsibility to notify Ms. Thayer in advance and make arrangements for a make-up test if you will be missing a test for a non-illness reason, including activities and sports. If you are truant, your test grade will be averaged with a “0”. Make-up tests are given before or after school on your own time. There are no test retakes.
Extra Help: I highly recommend and welcome any and all students to come and receive extra help. Students are welcomed in my classroom anytime the door is open. This will be most days at 7:15 am, break,2ndlunch, and after school until 3:45
UC/CSU Requirement: grades of “C” or better, both semesters.
Grade Requirements for next math classes:
Algebra 2/Trig: “C” or better, both semesters
Algebra 2/Trig Honors: “A” both semesters and teacher recommendation
Class Rules:
- Be Respectful-Including no texting or playing games in class, no cursing, treating others and their belonging with kindness, be on time, ect.
- Show your work- No work = No credit
- Ask questions- I can’t help or teach you if I do not know where you are lost so please ask questions.
