My Dear Parish,

A major responsibility I have as your parish priest is to get to know the families of our parish. The Code of Canon Law which governs the internal activity of the Church, and which I swore to observe when I became your pastor, puts it clearly in a particularly eloquent paragraph (Canon 529):

“In order to fulfill his office diligently, a pastor is to strive to know the faithful entrusted to his care. Therefore he is to visit families, sharing especially in the cares, anxieties, and griefs of the faithful, strengthening them in the Lord, and prudently correcting them if they are failing in certain areas….”

The paragraph goes on to describe in greater detail precisely who should require particular attention:

“…With generous love, he is to help the sick, particularly those close to death, by refreshing them solicitously with the sacraments and commending their souls to God;…”

But there are still more who have a special claim on the pastors attention:

“…with particular diligence he is to seek out the poor, the afflicted, the lonely, those exiled from their country, and similarly those weighted down by special difficulties….”

Last but not least, this important paragraph speaks of spouses and parents:

“…He is to work so that spouses and parents are supported in fulfilling their proper duties and is to foster growth of Christian life in the family.”

I’d love you to help me fulfill this great portion of my responsibility as the pastor of Saint Joseph’s. It is going to take a while since there are hundreds of families in our parish. But even if I’m able to visit just a few families each week—very briefly to say ‘hello’ and ask if there is anything I can do for you—I should still be able to visit all the families of our parish in 2-3 years.

I suppose this is all just to let you know you can expect, hopefully sooner than later, a call to see if I can come by. Please let me know if you think the rectory office may require an up-to-date phone number or other way to reach you.

See you soon!

With paternal affection,
