A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO ENCOURAGE ALL LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN SOUTH CAROLINA TO SET SCHOOL CALENDAR START DATES AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO LABOR DAY IN ORDER TO GENERATE THE MAXIMUM REVENUE IN SOUTH CAROLINA’S NUMBER ONE INDUSTRY, TRAVEL AND TOURISM, AND CONSEQUENTLY INCREASING FUNDING FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION.
Whereas, travel and tourism is the largest employer in the State and the largest exporter, bringing more new money into our economy than any other industry in the State; and
Whereas, the travel and tourism industry also is the third largest contributor to capital investment and the fourth largest contributor to the state’s gross domestic product; and
Whereas, the impact of travel and tourism is clearly critical to our state’s economy and any steps that can be taken to promote this industry, especially in years of budget difficulties, should be given the highest priority; and
Whereas, one of the biggest seasons for travel and tourism in South Carolina is from mid-June through Labor Day, a period during which many South Carolina families vacation in South Carolina and during which the travel and tourism industry relies heavily on school-aged teen-employees; and
Whereas, giving families broad choices in vacation time and having students available for the travel and tourism workforce is an important component of this industry’s contribution to South Carolina’s economy; and
Whereas, in that school start dates will now be established locally, it is vital that each school district take into account the economic impact the district’s school start date will have on the travel and tourism industry and accordingly, on our state economy. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, encourage all local school districts in South Carolina, especially in these times of economic hardship, to set school calendar start dates as close as possible to Labor Day in order to generate the maximum revenue in South Carolina’s number one industry, travel and tourism, and consequently increasing funding for public education.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to each school district in the state in those counties authorized to establish their own school start dates.
