UK to Hold Medical Interpreter Conference
LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 5, 2009)– The University of Kentucky Area Health Education Center (UK AHEC), in collaboration with the Kentucky South Eastern Medical Interpreters Association, will host the second annual South East Medical Interpreter conference June 18 and 19 at the UK Student Center.
The Tennessee Association of Medical Interpreters and Translators (TAMIT) has joined UK to present this conference. The keynote speaker is Cynthia Roat, a member of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) Standards, Training and Certification Committee.
"Cindy has been, and continues to be, a leading voice in the field on medical interpreting, from her earlier days as principle author of the Bridging the Gap medical interpreter training program to her current duties," said Carlos Marin, health careers coordinator of AHEC.
In addition to Roat, the conference will include workshops on a variety of topics, from the latest news in certification to practical applications in the everyday work life of a medical interpreter.
"If you are looking for a job in the field of medical interpreting, a Job Marketplace will be held during the conference," said Marin. "We hope you will seize this opportunity to come learn, network and to enjoy the company of your fellow interpreters."
In 2008 the Medical Interpreter Network of Georgia (MING) reached out to medical interpreter associations in neighboring states to plan the first event. Joining MING were the South Eastern Medical Interpreters Association (SEMIA) in Kentucky, the Tennessee Association of Professional Interpreters and Translators (TAPIT) and the South Carolina Health Interpreter Association (SCHIA). Held in June of 2008 at Emory University, the event attracted participants from the southeast region and beyond.
