All registered students will comply with SISD’s dress code policy as well as the Montwood Middle School policy, as stated below. Parent notes will not be accepted for uniform exceptions. Dress Code Policy is established for the safety of all students and school personnel. MMS Administrators have the authority to make changes should something become a safety concern, distraction, or disruption that affects the learning environment or safety of the school environment.
It is the philosophy of the Socorro Independent School District and Montwood Middle School that students should maintain high standards of dress, grooming, and appearance. SISD has established the following universal uniform options to compliment other agreed upon school uniform options:
- Khaki pants with a white polo shirt without a school logo;
- School uniform pants and a school colored polo shirt without a school logo.
- Physical education uniform bottoms (shorts or sweatpants in any color) and a white, gray, or school colored T-shirt without a school logo.
As per Policy FNCA (LOCAL), a universal uniform may be worn at any SISD school which has elected to implement a school uniform policy.
B. Book Bags: Backpacks, tote, or drawstring bags are OPTIONAL.
1. Must be of normal size. No over-sized / x-large camping/hiking style or wheels.
2. Must be free of gang related symbols/art and inappropriate language. No writing allowed
3. Athletics, Sports, Cheer bags etc., must be put in the locker room prior to homeroom.
C. ID’s must be with student at all times, either on their lanyard or key-chain. Lanyards can be purchased from MMS. A replacement ID can be purchased for $5 in the front office.
D. NOT ALLOWED:
1. Clothing:
a. No skirts allowed (only skorts allowed –skirt with shorts attached)
b. Length shorts/skorts cannot be shorter than arm’s length
c. No spandex or jeggings/leggings.
d. No side pockets on pants or shorts, such as cargo/carpenter style
e. No suggestive or indecent clothing, including gang-related style/symbols (including cartoon figures), alcohol, drugs, Satanic or anything of a sexual nature.
f. No oversize/baggy clothing or jackets. No hip riding pants
g. Only school approved hoodies are allowed (See Required Uniform # 3, 5, 6)
h. No torn or unhemmed pants, shorts, skorts, capris or shirts. No shirts (including sleeves), pants, shorts, or capris rolled up, rubber banded or folded under or over.
2. Shoes:
a. No steel-toe shoes, boots or Healies (shoes with rollers on bottom)
b. No backless, slip-ons, open-toed, flip flops, bedroom slippers or clogs (safety reasons)
c. No high heeled shoes
3. Accessories:
a. No suggestive or indecent accessories, including gang-related style/symbols (including cartoon figures), alcohol, drugs, Satanic or anything of a sexual nature.
b. No caps, hats, beanies, scarves or sunglasses worn in the building (must be put away)
c. Earrings on students should be no larger than 1”. Only 2 earrings per ear allowed. No body piercings, facial piercings or ear gauges.
d. All necklaces must be worn inside shirt.
e. No initial belt buckles or wallet chains. No oversized belt buckles that are larger than a school ID
f. Lanyards MUST be worn around neck or put away. As a safety concern, they cannot be hanging from pockets or book bags.
4. Hair
a. No hairstyles, which cause undue attention or a health and/or safety hazard, such as Mohawks, faded Mohawks spikes, mushroom or dyed/shaved designs cut into hair(admin discretion)
b. No unnatural hair colors including unnatural colored hair extensions and highlights (blue, bright red, pink, purple, etc.)
c. No hairnets
5. Make-up
a. No cat eyes or black/brown lipstick
b. No false eyelashes or shaved designs on eyebrows
c. No long fingernails
6. Other
a. No body markings or writing on fingers, arms, hands, etc.
b. Binders/notebooks must be free of inappropriate language/materials, including gang-related symbols/art, alcohol, drugs or anything of a sexual nature.
c. No permanent markers, sharpies or liquid paper
E. Dress code Violations:
1. 1st-2nd Offense –Student may contact parent to drop off appropriate clothing or will be provided an opportunity to borrow the appropriate clothing from the campus (may be placed in SACuntil appropriate clothing is obtained)
2. 3rd Offense and any time after-student will receive an office referral and will remain in SAC as assigned by administration
F. Electronic Devices such as, I-Pods, I-Pads, tablets, electronic games, etc. may be used before/after school, otherwise, MUST BE TURNED OFF and headphones/earbuds put awaybeginning at 7:30 am through the end of instructional day to include Afterschool tutorials, Saturday School and Intersessions.
G. Cell phones may be used before/after school, otherwise, MUST BE TURNED OFFand headphones/earbuds put away beginning at 7:30 am through the end of the instructional day to includeafterschool tutoring, Saturday School and Intersession (no phone calls or textingduring this time). They must be put away and not visible.
1. 1st Offense: Phone will be confiscated. Parents may pick it up after school
2. 2nd Offense any time after: Phone will be confiscated. Parent may pick it up after school after a $15 fine is paid.
(If a student needs to reach a parent during school hours permission to use school phone will be granted. Office phone may be used for emergencies.
ON STATE TESTING DAYS –NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED!
All confiscated items can be picked up after school ONLY! School will not be held liable for any lost or stolen items.

Any Parent having an item of concern regarding the Uniform Dress Code will need to address the School Improvement Team Committee. The Committee is made up of parents and faculty members. An appointment may be scheduled by contacting an Administrator at 937-5800. The parent must submit in writing his/her concerns and turn it in to Administration to be added to the agenda.
