Exemplar:My 24-hour graph, from Algebra 1, is an example of Craftsmanship and Quality. The purpose of this piece of work was to show that I can calculate fractions, decimals, and percentages, and create a graph to show the data. The learning target was: I can create and interpret graphical displays of data. In order to complete the project we had to create a pie chart showing how much time I spend doing different activities (hygiene, school, homework, eating, travel, TV/computer, chores, and sleep) in 24 hours. This piece of work shows that Craftsmanship and Quality is a strength for me because I made sure my work was accurate by double-checking my calculations. For example, when I calculated the percentage of my day I spend on homework, I set up a proportion: . I solved for x and then checked my work by converting the values on both sides of the equation into decimals to verify that they were equal. I made sure my work was precisely drawn by using a ruler and protractor. For example, once I calculated the number of degrees that should be in the homework sector,I used the ruler to draw a radius of the circle. I placed the protractor’s center on the center of the circle and the protractor’s baseline on the radius, and I put a dot at 30 degrees. Then I used my ruler to draw another radius through my dot. This shows that by using my tools correctly and by double-checking my work, I created a piece of work that was well-crafted and accurate.

The purpose of this piece of work was to show that I can calculate fractions, decimals, and percentages, and create a graph to show the data. The learning target was: I can create and interpret graphical displays of data. In order to complete the project we had to create a pie chart showing how much time I spend doing different activities (hygiene, school, homework, eating, travel, TV/computer, chores, and sleep) in 24 hours. This piece of work shows that Craftsmanship and Quality is something I need to work on because I didn’t double check my work before creating my final draft. When I calculated the percentage of my day I spend on homework, I set up a proportion: . I solved for x but I must have made a silly mistake because I wrote down that I spend .08% of my day when the answer should actually be 8.3%. Double checking your work to make sure it makes sense is an important part of Craftsmanship and Quality. Another way my project shows that I need to work on Craftsmanship and Quality is because I wasn’t careful about drawing the pieces of my pie chart accurately. For example, I used a protractor, but I was probably rushing. I was supposed to measure 30 degrees for one piece of my pie, but my teacher pointed out that that piece of the pie chart is actually closer to 20 degrees. If I want to do my best work, I need to pay more attention to checking my work and working slowly and accurately.
