Assistant Lecturer in Sports Science Nutrition – Permanent Wholetime Post

The Institute delivers a very successful programme in the area of Sports Science and Health. The aim of the course is to educate students in the scientific foundations of sport performance and lifelong health. Graduates from the course would be expected to have expertise in areas including nutrition, exercise physiology, sports medicine and biomechanics, behavioural science and research methods.

The Institute now have a vacancy for an Assistant Lecturer in Sports Science Nutrition.

The successful candidate will be lecturing in key areas of the program including;

  • sports and exercise nutrition
  • molecular exercise physiology

It is also desirable that the candidate would have excellent communication skills so as to engage the students in this discipline area. The successful candidate will also be expected to supervise the research undertaken by undergraduate and post graduate students.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants will be required to hold an appropriate Honours Primary Degree(level 8) in Sports Science / Health or related discipline with an award of at least 2.ii, together with at least 3 years relevant post graduate experience.

Ideally candidates will have experience of teaching at 3rd level undergraduate or post graduate level, and will also ideallyhave a post graduate qualification in sport and exercise nutrition and/or molecular exercise physiology, together with relevant experience in the area.

1Salary Scale (10 points)

Assistant Lecturer (New Entrant):€36,743 to €50,487 pa

Starting salary will be at the minimum point of the relevant scale only. Candidates should note that the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in accordance with Government pay policy.

Minimum Qualifications for Post

(1)Appropriate Honours Primary Degree(level 8) or equivalent 2.2

(2)3 years relevant post graduate experience

2Duties

The appointee will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administration The appointee shall carry out such duties as are assigned to him/her in accordance with collective agreements arrived at from time to time and authorised by the Minister for Education and Science, including but not limited to:

  1. Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by the management of the Institute, day or evening, up to 630 hours per annum including supervision of post-graduate students where appropriate. There will be a norm of 18 class contact hours per week, which may be varied by Institute management from 16 to 20 following consultation with the Assistant Lecturer. A weighting of 1.5 will apply to hours worked after 6.00 p.m.

(These arrangements are subject to collective agreements arrived at from time to time and authorised by the Minister for Education and Science).

  1. Carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examinations

work, and providing an academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities.

  1. Providing academic input on existing and new courses and course

development.

  1. Engaging in research, consultancy and development work as

appropriate.

  1. Participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings

convened by management.

  1. Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as

required by management.

  1. Engaging in promotion including student recruitment as appropriate.

h.Participating in the development, implementation and maintenance of

academic quality assurance arrangements.

  1. Participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of

their department/school and of the Institute.

  1. Directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrator and taking

academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work. When

an Assistant Lecturer is supervising a Tutor/Demonstrator a reduction in teaching hours will be applied on the basis of a one hour reduction per three hours demonstration/tutorials supervised.

3Progression

Assistant Lecturers will progress to the Grade of Lecturer on completion of one year’s service after having reached the maximum of the Assistant Lecturer scale subject to a minimum of five years continuous service in the grade subject to ability, experience, academic qualifications, scholarship and demonstrated performance. Possession of an appropriate defined postgraduate qualification or equivalent shall normally be considered an essential requirement.

Pensions

The appointee will become a member of the appropriate public service pension scheme. Broadly, if the appointee:

(a) served in a public service body as a pensionable public servant on 31 December 2012, then the terms of the Education Sector Superannuation Scheme shall apply to the appointee; or

(b) first serves in a public service body as a pensionable public servant on or after 1 January 2013 or has not, prior to appointment, served in a public service body as a pensionable public servant, then the provisions of the Public Service Pensions Single Scheme will apply.

As the rules relating to membership of these schemes contain a number of exceptions, if the appointee has any queries as to which pension scheme provisions apply to them, these should be raised as soon as practicable after appointment with the HR Manager. The appointee shall be obliged to make pension contributions in accordance with the rules of the applicable scheme and the appointee shall be subject to the applicable scheme’s provisions as amended from time to time.
