- Meet the author\illustrator Allen Say by watching a video
- Discuss genre: historical fiction
- Use a map to locate the 2 settings in the story: Japan & San Francisco
- Graphic Organizer for vocabulary words
- Writing – Describe the grandfather’s problem in the story and explain if he ever found a solution.
- Identify & discuss story elements (setting, characters, problem, solution, and events)
- Review irregular nouns
- Watch Brainpop Jr. – Possessive Nouns and take online quiz
- Promethean planet flipchart-Singular Possessive nouns
- Introduce Singular Possessive Nouns – Noun Unit/Lesson 8

- Discuss the Caldecott Medal that the book received for the beautiful watercolor paintings
- Review vocabulary using powerpoint
- Listen to the book trailer to give an example of summarizing the story
- Writing- Students complete a time line of grandfather’s journey in the correct sequence.
- Play to review possessive nouns:

- Students complete a scavenger hunt of vocabulary and comprehension questions
- Writing - Use a top hat to compare and contrast how North America was different than grandfather’s village in Japan.
- Introduce Plural Possessive Nouns– Noun Unit/Lesson 9

- Writing – At the end of the story the grandson says, "I think I know my grandfather now.” Explain why he says this and what does it mean.
