Whole Life Planning in Community Based Programs

A Professional Training Seminar for those who support adults with intellectual disability who are deaf-blind in community-based programs

Whole Life Planning in Community Based Programs provides participants with an in depth study of the Personal Futures Planning (PFP) process and teaches them about the tools and skills needed to create a comprehensive PFP for the consumers they work with. Participants will have the opportunity to meet the residents of Destiny, the only community residence in New York State designed exclusively for individuals who are deaf-blind with intellectual disabilities, and observe them at their work sites on HKNC’s campus. Participants will learn about communication philosophies, strategies, and systems.

WHO: This course is geared towards those who support adults who are deaf-blind in community-based programs (residential, work and day habilitation programs) including: group home program directors, direct care staff, clinical staff, deaf-blind specialists, program specialists, job coaches, supervisors, QMRP staff, ABS staff, parents and adult family members.

LOCATION: The Leona and Harry B. Helmsley Conference Center on the campus of the Helen Keller National Center, a beautiful 25 acre facility in Sands Point, Long Island, NY. The Center is convenient to most NYC area airports. Housing is available on campus on a first come/first served basis.

COST: The $625 seminar fee per participant includes training manual, online training, 2 ½ day on-site training at HKNC in NY, lodging and 3 meals a day.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Whole Life Planning in Community Based Programs provides participants with an in depth study of the Personal Futures Planning (PFP) process with a focus on recommendations for functional activities to support an ISP (Individual Service Plan). Participants will develop action plans detailing a lifestyle profile and communication strategies for use with their focus consumer. Topics covered include: Personal Futures Planning; modification of Orientation & Mobility techniques; alternative communication strategies; and independent living skills for simple and safe cooking and cleaning. Destiny is operated by the Helen Keller National Center with funding from the New York State Office of Persons with Developmental Disabilities.
