Expectations of Worthington
Select Baseball Coaches
The purpose of select baseball is to provide a positive opportunity for young baseball players to improve their skills and knowledge of the game while playing competitive baseball. We expect all of our coaches to adhere to this code of conduct and the principles embodied in it.
This document is posted on the WYB website to ensure that all coaches and parents are familiar with it.
Our head coaches are expected to:
- Abide by the guidelines of the WYB select baseball program and uphold the principles, standards, and expectations contained in this document.
- Abide by the rules, regulations, and guidelines of the Central Ohio Youth Baseball League (COYBL) and governing bodies, including Nations Baseball.
- Commit to the development of everyplayer on their team.
- Give each player the opportunity to learn and play multiple positions.
- Be knowledgeable of baseball rules and specifically the rules of the league in which their team competes.
- Use at least two assistant coaches, who will be held to the same expectations as the head coach.
- Respond directly and in a timely fashion to parents who express concerns.
- Be fiscally responsible with team funds.
- Schedule games with opposing teams.
- Demonstrate positive and appropriate behavior in the presence of their team.
- Motivate and encourage theirplayers, including honestly and fairly assessing each player’s performance and the team’s performance.
- Be fair, objective, and reasonable with expectations for the players and when deciding where and how often each player will play.
- Not use profanity in the presence of theirteam.
- Schedule games and practices in a way that does not overburden their players.
- Communicate schedule changes, especially weather-related changes, to parents and umpires as soon as possible.
- Help prepare fields for games, if necessary.
- Help install the fences at Perry Park prior to the start of the season and help remove the fences when the season ends. This includes recruiting team parents to help.
- Serve as Site Coordinator during the Worthington Classic July 4th Tournament or ensure that at least one parent on their team serves as Site Coordinator.
- Review and practice basic first aid principles needed to treat common baseball injuries.
- Organize practices that are challenging and fun for all players.
- Be a responsible steward of all equipment borrowed from or purchased by WYB.
- Provide an environment for their team that is free of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol.
- Promote ethical behavior and good sportsmanship by players and fans. This includes stressing the importance of fair play and civility toward opponents and officials.
- Support umpires and league officials in their efforts to control the games.
- Teach their team the importance of being gracious in both victory and defeat.
- Not allow discrimination against or mockery of another team’s players or fans for any reason.
- Submit to a background check through WYB.
- Address problems as they arise and let fans and players know that behavior contrary to these rules will not be tolerated.
