PE Sports Premium Funding 2017 – 2018

Every school receives funding via the PE Sports Premium Funding scheme which is to be spent strengthening and improving the provision of quality sport within primary schools - Smithdown Primary School received £8856.00 worth of funding for 2016-2017.

Below is a review of last year’s spending alongwith a prediction for funds to be received for 2017-2018.

Section 1: Reflection: What have we achieved? (2016 – 2017)

Improved pupil performance and engagement /
  • The programme which the school had planned to instigate and follow, due to unforeseen circumstances, fell through – money spent on other outside coaches to come into school to coach children and work alongside teachers.
  • Coaching sessions were delivered to all Key Stage 2 classes by: Widnes Vikings (Rugby), Mersey Mavericks (Basketball), Liverpool Lacrosse (Pop Lacrosse), Target Football (Football). The class teacher would partake in the coached sessions – which served as CPD.
  • Subject Leader teaching KS2 PE weekly (as part of PPA cover) assessment skills introduced across a range of sports (whole school)
  • Subject Leader ensured assessment sheets being completed regularly by class teachers (EYFS/KS1)
  • Pupils involved in assessment process through ownership of ‘Believe to Achieve’ skills books. These books re-iterate skills being taught in child friendly language and are referred to prior to and after lessons, used as ‘Before and After’ self-assessment tools.
  • Key Learning for 2017-2018:
  • If external coaches are used at any point, extend to include and work with Key Stage 1 classes and teachers (aswell as Key Stage 2)
  • Teachers are to receive CPD via attending training courses held by LSSP and SIP
  • School to employ a sports apprentice (L2 or L3 trained) in order to work in partnership with teachers

To support and engage the least active children through after school sports clubs / £2535 / Enrichment beyond the curriculum / Increased uptake and participation in a range of school sports clubs.
Wider range of sports included in extra curricular sports /
  • An LSA was trained to L3 and held Breakfast Club sports sessions (daily) and weekly after school clubs for both Key Stage 1 and 2
  • Breakfast Club Sports: average of 28 pupils participating daily (approx. 40% of breakfast club children)
  • After school sports clubs held provided for an average of 40 children
  • Key Learning for 2017 – 2018:
  • To continue to hold daily Breakfast Club Sports sessions
  • To introduce a measurable target for all (especially the least active) to attend (for example) 6 sessions of Breakfast Club sports per term or 1 after school sports club (for a half term) over the course of the year
  • Our L3 LSA has now moved on to pursue a teaching career – to further train to a higher level other members of staff to replace our lost colleague

To attend sports competitions and increase pupil participation in school games / £1600 / Enrichment beyond the curriculum / Bronze membership with LSSP in order to access competitions
School participation in a range of sports competitions including: cricket, football, cross-country, athletics and taster opportunities in a range of less traditional school sports, such as new age kurling /
  • Class v Class tournaments (L1) were held in Hockey, Football, displays and performances within Dance and Gymnastics were held alongwith a whole school Sports Day in July
  • School v School competitions (L2) accessed via LSSP membership:
14 different competitions entered (13 KS2 1 KS1)
200 (KS2) children participated in these events (some children repeated)
** Team qualified for CITY finals AND MERSEYSIDE finals, finishing 4th overall,
2nd in Liverpool

  • To continue to hold class v class tournaments / events
  • To increase the amount of Key Stage 1 competitions entered

To pay for professional
development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport / £2295 / Curriculum Learning / CPD / Teachers to work with Liverpool School Sports Partnership and JM Education to develop knowledge and understanding. Improved confidence in delivery and assessment. /
  • JMU partnership programme did not happen
  • An LSA was trained upto L3 in order to be able to deliver sports sessions after school
  • Subject leader attended LSSP networking / updating meetings
  • Key Learning for 2017 – 2018:
  • Subject leader to have dialogue with colleagues to ascertain training / support needs – to then seek and provide support / training / guidance / resources

To provide cover to release
teachers for professional
development in PE and sport / £1000 / Curriculum Learning / CPD / Teachers to work with Liverpool School Sports Partnership and JM Education to develop knowledge and understanding. Improvedconfidence in delivery. /
  • JMU partnership / mentoring programme did not happen
  • Subject leader introduced assessment model for teachers to use as a basis to plan and deliver lessons
  • Subject leader carried out observations of lessons across a selection of classes, feedback given to teachers. Professional dialogue held about further support requirements – if needed

To provide Level 3 LSA, to
support sports activities
throughout lunch time and lead
sports/play leader scheme / £3000 / Curriculum Learning and enrichment beyond the curriculum / Increased uptake and participation in a range of sporting activities. Boost pupil confidence and self esteem. /
  • LSA trained – held after school sports clubs, has since left to pursue teaching career
  • Key Learning for 2017 – 2018:
  • To continue to hold class v class tournaments / events
  • To upskill / provide additional training for additional members of staff in order to be able to provide sustainable opportunities and sporting provision in the form of after school sports clubs (and breakfast club sports)

To provide swimming lessons for children Year 1 to Year 6
(NC requires Key Stage 1 OR Key Stage 2) providing enhancement for BOTH key stages to ATTEND and providing Top Up for Year 6 / £6000 / Curriculum Learning / Children to develop confidence and improved skill in the pool. 85% Year 6 swim at least 25m /
  • Years 1 – 6 received a 10 week block of swimming lessons
  • Year 6 received an enhancement of ‘Top-Up’ swimming in June
  • 20 out of 30 (approx.. 66%) Year 6 children were able to complete the minimum distance of 25m
  • Key Learning for 2017 – 2018;
  • To continue to provide swimming enhancements for Years 1 and 2 and Top Up enhancements for Year 6, with an aim to improve on the % of children swimming 25m or more
