What to know, or in other words, here is the answer to your question, “What is going to be on the exam?”. You can skip (you will never be tested on) all the Clinical Connections, unless I lecture directly about it. You can skip all the “Development of the….” topics. You can skip all the “Aging and the…” topics.

Ch. 1: Text on pg. 2; text on pgs. 3-4; fig. 1.1; text on pages 9-19; figs. 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 1.7; exhibit 1.A; and of course all of the end-of-chapter material.

Ch. 2: everything except you can omit meiosis. Meiosis will be covered during human reproduction at the end of the class.

Ch. 3: everything except you may omit the embryonic connective tissue (mesenchyme and mucous connective tissue) and you may omit areolar connective tissue and you can skip compact bone and blood: both to be covered later. You may omit muscular tissue (we will cover it later). You may omit nervous tissue (we will cover it later).

Ch. 4: know fig. 4.3; know fig. 4.4 (b); know fig. 4.5; know my simplified list of structures produced by the three primary germ layers-a shortened version of table 4.1.

Ch. 5: know everything.

Ch. 6: know everything.

Ch. 7: know everything.

Ch. 8: know everything.

Ch. 9: From my lecture notes, match everything in this chapter that matches what I put on the board; know the names of every possible movement at all the joints in the body.

Ch. 10: know everything.

Ch. 11: You may omit lever systems; know ‘effects of fascicle arrangement’ on pg. 314; see the class web site chart of all the muscles/origins/insertions that we will be responsible for. You can skip each muscle’s innervation.

Ch. 12: Know everything (blood).

Ch. 13: Know everything (heart). Remember to omit the ‘development of the …’ sections of all chapters.

Ch. 14: Go to the Laboratory Manual page and click on the ‘Vessels To Know’ link. These links will list for you all the required vessels.

Ch. 15: Know everything except omit “Principal Groups of Lymph Nodes”. You may omit the histology of the thymus gland.

Ch. 16: Know everything on pgs. 542-554. You may omit ‘neural circuits’ and omit ‘regeneration and neurogenesis’ on pgs. 555-556.

Ch. 17: Know everything on pgs. 559-569. You may omit pg. 570-end of the chapter. Do know about the Dermatomes, Fig. 17.10.

Ch. 18: Know everything. Know all the Cranial Nerves.

Ch. 19: You may omit ‘development’ as usual (pgs. 636-638); Know pgs. 639-641; Omit pgs. 642-643. Know Fig. 19.6 on pg. 644. Know 645-647. Omit table 19.2 and 19.3. Omit pgs. 650-end of chapter.

Ch. 20: Know only: Figure 20.1, Table 20.2, Figure 20.5.

Ch. 21: Know everything in this chapter except ‘development’, as usual.

Ch. 22: Know everything. You may omit ‘development’ and ‘aging’.

Ch. 23: Know everything. You may omit regulation of respiration, exercise and development. Know this diagram of lung volumes:

Ch. 26: Know everything and now go back and learn ‘meiosis’ from chapter 2.
