Description / Religious preamble
Bequests:
- Son, John Kent, dwelling house and garden with a “plat of ground” adjoining, about an acre, being part of testator’s land “in or called Hendra” in St Dennis, now in possession of son John or his tenants, for his life;
After John’s death, house and acre of land to testator’s grandson John, eldest son of testator’s son Nicholas Kent;
if grandson dies before testator’s son John, Nicholas “and his heirs forever” are to inherit property.
Son John Kent £10 payable as 2 shillings a week until fully paid, unless the money due to Jacob Slade of St Stephen [in Brannel] on a note is not paid when testator dies, the £10 is to be paid to him, and no weekly sum is to be paid to John.
The occupier of the dwelling house and acre of land is to pay a shilling a year rent to executor, due on 25 March.
- Son Nicholas, dwelling house and half the garden now in his possession with the privileges belonging; also three plats of ground, about 2 acres, known as higher Down Close, the Rye Arish and the half acre, all part of testator’s land “in or called Hendra” [St Dennis], for residue of term of years still to come on Hendra; Nicholas to pay 2 shillings a year rent on 25 March to the executor for the duration of the term, but not to pay land tax, church or poor rates;
Son Nicholas one fifth “part, deal or share” in a stream tin work in Terrice Moor [Terras in St Stephen?] for the continuation of the sett, and £20.
- Daughters Jane, wife of Joseph Brockenshire, and Elizabeth, wife of Nicholas Cock, £10 each; Mary, wife of Joseph Bullen £3; Grace, wife of Jonathan Stephens, £10, to Joan, wife of Thomas Stephen £10, all to be paid within one year of testator’s death.

- “Dearly beloved Wife” Jane £4 a year payable quarterly out of Hendra; also the kitchen and the chamber over, “being part of my Dwelling House”, also the milk of a cow to be kept at Hendra for her use, right in the garden, one feather bed furnished, and part of all other household [goods] for her use for her life, then to executors, “all which I have given & ordained for her if in cause [sic] she cannot a gree to live Dwell with my Executor …”

- “ … if after my Death any of my Children Grand Children or Sons in law or any or either of whom shall Trouble Disturb Contradict or Interrupt my Executor so as to Commence any Lawsuit or Quarrel and not be satisfied & Contented with that which I have given unto him or her or them, him her or them so Disturbing or Quarrelling as aforesd shall be Utterly Excluded & Cut off from what I have given …”
