Will need hand out page 1 to show on screen. Paper and pencils for students to right on and with. A way to show the PowerPoint presentation.
Anticipatory Set/Invitation to Learn
So how many of you like Thanksgiving day? ( Have students raise their hands, and call on a few, also ask them why they like it or don’t like Thanksgiving day.) Class those are all very good reasons. Here is a picture of the first Thanksgiving. ( Show page 1 on screen) Now class I want you to look at this picture and tell me what you see. ( Have students tell what they see in the picture.) I want you to tell me about the two different kinds of people you see in this picture. Why are they dressed differently and look different from each other? ( Let students think for a minute, and give you their answers.) Well class today we are going to learn about these two kinds of people that come from different culture backgrounds. We are going to learn about how sharing and cooperating with each other can bring many benefits. The names of these two types of people are called the Pilgrims and Indians (Wamanpoag Tribe), and they were at the very first Thanksgiving..
Main Inquiry Question
Today we are going to learn about these two different types of people and how my sharing and cooperating with each other they have different effects on each other. We all know the Indians were here long before the Pilgrims came to America. So today we are all going to discover for ourselves what we think about these two kinds of people. Was it important for the pilgrims and Indians to work together?
Hypothesis Development
Now class I want you to use your own prior knowledge about relationships and why people work together. Also think about the benefits of cooperating and sharing. When you have those ideas in mind I want you to think about what you already know about the pilgrims and Indians. How did they live and survive, and did they effect one another. With all that background in mind I want you to come up with your own answer as to if is was important for the pilgrims and Indians to work together. When you come up with your ideas I want you to write it down on a piece of paper. After you are done writing we are going to discover and find the answer for ourselves.
Data Gathering: First Data Set
( I have 4 date Set for this lesson and at the end of each data set I ask the students to re-think their hypothesis. I have this all done on PowerPoint and will present this to the students one slide at a time and then let them think about the information I have showed them. I will display the text below from my PowerPoint.)
Data 1. About the Pilgrims
The Pilgrims came to the ‘New World” from England, for many reasons. When they arrived in America they decided to live in Plymouth.
When they came to live in Plymouth only half of the would live though the first winter. Most of them died as a result of the ship ride age over. During the first winter many of the Pilgrims got sick.
Do you need to rethink your First Hypothesis
First Hypothesis Revision
Ok students based on the information you have just learned about the Pilgrims I want you to rethink your first hypothesis you made about the Pilgrims and Indianans and the importance of working together. Do you think the Pilgrims need help or do you think they are doing ok on their own? ( Let students think about these questions before moving on to date set 2.) Ok class if you have changed your hypothesis I want you to write it down under your first one.
Data Gathering: Second Data Set
(Again the text from my PowerPoint)
Date 2. About the Indians
The Wamanpoag IndianTribe already living on American before the Pilgrims came and lived on it The Indians lived by farming, fishing, hunting, and gathering. When winter passed they moved to the shoreline to fish and plant crops. They were also good at hunting and fishing and knew how to live off the land.
Do you need to rethink your Second Hypothesis?
Second Hypothesis Revision
Ok class now we know a little bit about both the Indians and the Pilgrims. What are you thinking about now. Do the Pilgrims need the help of the Indians and do the Indians need the help of the Pilgrims. Was it really important for them to work together? I want you to think about this in your head and change your hypothesis if you need to.
Data Gathering: Third Data Set
(Text from PowerPoint)
Date 3. The Pilgrims and Indians together.
•A few of the Indians stayed with the Pilgrims for a few months and taught them how to live in this place. They gave them deer meat and beaver skins. They taught them how to grow corn and other new vegetables and how to build Indian-style homes. They showed them how plants could be used as medicines, and other skills needed for survival.
•By the time fall came, things were going well for the Pilgrims, thanks to the help from the Indians. They had enough food to last the winter. They were now in better health and they knew more about living in the new land.
Do you need to rethink your hypothesis?
Third Hypothesis Revision
All right class now you know about how they worked together and how it helped them. I want you to think of what might have happened if the Indians didn’t help the Pilgrims. What might have happened? (Let children think of this questions and have a few share their answers). Now that you know this information do you want to change your hypothesis or keep it the same?
Data Gathering: Fourth Data Set
(text from PowerPoint)
Date set 3. Their effects on each other.
When the Pilgrims came to the ‘New World” they brought disease with them and some of the Indians started to die from this. Over time, these two groups started to fight and not get along, mostly because of different thoughts over the land. The English felt that they owned the land since they paid for it. The Indians believed that one only owns the land when they are using it.
Do you need to rethink your Hypothesis?
Fourth Hypothesis Revision
Ok class this is the last set of data so I really want you to think about all the information I have given you. Was it important for the Pilgrims and Indians to work together? Pull all the information you have learned and come up with your last and final hypothesis.
Conclusion (closure)
Ok class I am sure you have all came up and have written down really good final hypothesis. I also want you to write down some of the reasons you came up with the hypothesis you did. As you do this think about why wasit important for the Pilgrims and Indians to work together, and then tell me why.
What were some of the benefits of them working together and sharing? I now want you to share with your classmates at your table what you came up with. I want you to also share why you came up with the hypothesis that you did. (Give students about 4 minutes to do this) Well class I am sure we all came up with different hypothesis, but I think it is save to say that the Pilgrims needed some help from the Indians. With out their help they might have not been able to live on this land. So we are grateful for their help that they gave the Pilgrims. We also know that the Pilgrims were very grateful for their help and that is why they had a Thanksgiving dinner. They wanted to show the Indians how thankful they were that they were able to work together.
Assessment
I really wanted students to see the benefits of cooperating and sharing. By the Indians sharing with the Pilgrims they were able to live and survive on this land. While the students are telling their classmates how they came up with the last hypothesis I will listen and see if they understand the benefits of sharing and working together. I will also read their answers that they wrote down to see what they came up with.
