2018AVMA Externship Stipend Program
The American Veterinary Medical Association offers assistance to students seeking to broaden their education through externship experiences in diverse areas of veterinary medicine. These awards are intended to help alleviate expenses incurred by the student during an externship.
- Stipends will be awarded to students for externships in non-clinical practice settings, with special emphasis on critically under-served areas of veterinary medicine. These may include, but are not limited to: public practice (e.g., CDC, FDA, USDA, NIH), industry (e.g., pharmaceutical, diagnostic laboratories, or animal food companies), or research.
- Stipends will be awarded to students for externships in food supply veterinary practice settings (e.g., dairy, beef, swine, or poultry).
These experiences add breadth to students’ perspectives and make them better advocates for their patients and their profession.
Applicants must submit their complete application package by January 19, 2018. Applications will be accepted for externships completed within the calendar year preceding the application deadline and those scheduled for the calendar year of the deadline (365 days prior to or after the deadline for application).
To be eligible for the program, a student must:
- Be at least a second year veterinary student
- Be a Student Chapter/Associate AVMAmember in good standing
- Candidates secure their own externship and present their plan as part of the stipend application process.
Applications will be reviewed and stipends granted based on suitability of the externship site, the student’s interest, and the opportunity for knowledge expansion. Students may apply multiple years, but are eligible to receive the award only one time. The application and information on all required documents can be found on the following pages.
All prerequisite materials must be submitted at the same time in one application packet
The applications will be reviewed by the Membership and Field Services Division of the AVMA. The selected applicants will be notified by electronic mail that they will be awarded a stipend upon completion of the externship and submittal of all required materials. Required materials include: an experience report, W9 form, and a brief sponsor exit letter. Acceptance of the stipend award grants the AVMA permission to use the stipend recipient’s experience and materials in AVMA campaigns or future stipend promotions.
