Fear No Art Entertainment Installs Apogee Loudspeaker System
in Prominent San Francisco Area Venue, The Mystic Theatre
Petaluma, CA – Apogee Sound International, manufacturer of state-of-the-art sound reinforcement products for the professional audio industry, announced today that Fear No Art Entertainment has completed the installation of an Apogee loudspeaker system as part of remodeling Northern California’s landmark McNear’s Mystic Theatre.
McNear’s Mystic Theatre is located in downtown Petaluma, California, the gateway to Sonoma County’s wine country 35 miles north of San Francisco. Opened in 1911, it featured live vaudeville entertainment, was later a movie house that appeared in the film “American Graffiti”, and in 1992 was renovated to accommodate live music performances for up to 550 guests. Today it is an important venue — just outside of the booking envelope for San Francisco’s 1000-seat and under rooms — that provides music lovers a packed calendar of top national and international touring acts including Richard Thompson, John Hiatt, Joan Osbourn, Spearhead, Taj Mahal, and Tower of Power.
The Mystic Theatre’s new Apogee loudspeaker system was designed and installed by Randy Teaford of Fear No Art Entertainment of Santa Rosa, CA. Teaford has over 20 years of professional experience in the design, installation, and engineering of club and concert sound systems for nationally and internationally recognized performers. He has also served as Production Manager and Chief Engineer for the Mystic Theatre since 1999.

Said Barry Grzebik, Director of Engineering for Apogee, “We’re excited that an engineer of Randy Teaford’s caliber was pleased with the original Apogee system and decided to retain the theory of that system — and enhance it with Apogee’s newest products.”
“The Mystic requires a system that’s versatile enough to handle everything from a quiet, sit- down act like John Hiatt to a wild act like Spearhead,” said Teaford. “We spoke with other major loudspeaker manufacturers, but we loved the original Apogee system — and the compliments we’ve always heard from tour engineers and road managers since that system was installed five years ago.”
Said Woody Nuss, FOH engineer for Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker and Pete Yorn, "The new Apogee rig allows me to mix for one environment. No more compensating for mixing in the balcony and having the floor sound different — just one smooth sound field. I also find that I use less channel strip EQ, and my shadow echoes are more well defined at lower volumes."
The Mystic’s house system now features a pair of tri-amped Apogee FH-4 Compact Concert Loudspeakers (15", 10" and 2") flown above the stage for main floor and balcony coverage and powered by three dedicated Apogee DA-800 amplifiers with Apogee PFH-4processors. “The FH-4’s are really great — the vocals are just gorgeous,” Teaford said. On the floor in front of each side of the stage is an Apogee AE-12 subwoofer system (two 18" drivers).
Atop each AE-12 subwoofer sits one Apogee APL-800 Self-Powered Arrayable Loudspeaker for in-fill on the dance floor and mid-room. The bi-amped APL-800 (15" and 2") features dual 400W power amplifiers and state-of-the-art analog processing circuits for pristine sound quality.
The stage monitor system features two additional self-powered Apogee APL-800’s to provide side fills. Across the stage are six bi-amped Apogee FS-2 wedges (12" and 2") plus one FS-2 for the monitor engineer, all powered by Apogee DPA-FS2 amplifier/processors. The stage system also includes two Apogee AE-8B bi-amped wedges (15" and 2") with Apogee P-8 processors, plus four Apogee Artist 4200 passive wedges (12" and 1") from the original system.

The drummer’s monitor is a self-powered tri-amped system. It features a bi-amped Apogee APL-220 (12" and 2") self-powered loudspeaker with dual 400-watt amplifiers, and one Apogee APL-SB 18" self powered subwoofer with its built-in 1000-watt amplifier.
The Mystic’s new system has already been deemed a success. Said Ken O’Donnell, managing partner of McNear’s Mystic Theatre, “Using the Apogee system has enabled us to elevate the North Bay’s premiere music and entertainment venue’s sound to a new standard of excellence.”
“We’re proud to be associated with The Mystic Theatre,” said Steven Walker, Managing Director of Apogee. “Not only is it a major site on the national tour market, it is a historic and inviting theatre that provides a very comfortable atmosphere for performers and audiences alike.”
