8th Grade Week 17 Lesson Plans
Dec. 4-8
Monday 4th: Go over tests and group read
NE Standards: 8.1.1 and 8.1.2
Goal: Students will be pre-reading to get a basic understanding for the 7 Principles of the Constitution.
Students will be in groups to read. p. 228-231 about the Constitution. Students will define all seven bold words and explain the seven questions following the seven titles in the sections.
Tuesday 5th: Lecture 7 Principles of the Constitution
NE Standards: 8.1.1 and 8.1.2
Goal: Students will be able to list and explain the 7 Principles built into the Constitution and how the Constitution is a living document.
Students will be taking notes from a PowerPoint over the main themes of the constitution: 7 Principles.
Compare pictures of Founding Fathers to MLK Freedom March and discuss “We the people of the United States”
Go over Federalism chart and diagram of Checks and Balances
Rule of Law discussion, Representative Democracy
Clickers at end
Wednesday 6th: Lecture Preamble and Reading
NE Standards: 8.1.1 and 8.1.2
Goal: Students will be able to explain the purpose of the Preamble of the Constitution Clicker Review 7 Principles and Preamble. Students will finish the 7 Principles lecture and will then read and discuss the meaning behind the Preamble.
Students will also be assigned to read Article 1 of the Constitution and answer 1-10 Closer Look, which is in the margins of the text. Also, students will answer Main Ideas a, b, c, d on p. 239.
Thursday 7th: Lecture Article I
NE Standards: 8.1.1 and 8.1.2
Goal: Students will be able to name Nebraska’s members to Congress and list what qualifications are needed to have those positions.
Clicker Review; Principles and Preamble
Pre-questioning and group work, Students will have a lecture/discussion over Article I of the Constitution. House and Senate Requirements.
Introduce: How a bill becomes a law. P. 236-237 of text. School House Rock song.
Friday 8th: Finish Article I lecture.
NE Standards: 8.1.1 and 8.1.2
Goal: Students will be able to explain the steps and difficulty a bill has in becoming a law. Students will finish Article I: Legislative Branch. Complete class activity of House v. Senate on 14 year olds driving legally in the United States. Boys v. Girls to illustrate the law-making process and its difficulties. Will use clickers as well. Then students will have a reading assignment over Article 2. Executive Branch. Answer Closer Look 11-13 from margins, Main Ideas a, b, c. p. 240-243.
