About the UCL Institute of Education (IOE)
The UCL Institute of Education is a world-leading centre for research and teaching in social science and education. Forthree successive years(2014, 2015 and 2016), the Institute has been ranked number one for education worldwidein the QS World University Rankings. It was shortlisted for the 'University of the Year' title in the 2014 Times Higher Education (THE) awards. In January 2014, the IOE secured ‘outstanding’ grades from Ofsted on every criterion for its initial teacher training across primary, secondary and further education programme. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework, 94% of the IOE’s research was judged to be world class. In 2016 the IOE was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education, in recognition of its innovative social research and contribution to policy and practice in education.

The IOE is led by a Director, supported by three academic Pro-directors and a Director of Operations.

Department of Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment
The Department of Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment is a world-leading centre for geography, business, mathematics, science and humanities education. A core strength of the Department is in the study, support and improvement of pedagogy, curriculum and assessment through multidisciplinary programmes. The Department hosts top-rated initial teacher education programmes, incorporating Secondary PGCE and Teach First, innovative Masters programmes and a wide range of continuing professional development courses.
The Department has an international reputation for research, leading an extensive range of development projects, special interest groups and doctoral studies. The London Mathematics Centre, Science Learning Centre London, Development Education Research Centre, the Centre for Research and Development in Catholic Education, the Holocaust Education Development Programme are situated within the Department and contribute to its success.
Directing the Centre
In partnership with the other co-Director of the Centre to:
Develop the strategy for the Centre including long-term business development;
Provide vision and leadership for the Centre;
Promote the aims of the research centre within UCL and more widely with educational bodies in the UK and internationally;
Identify research needs and opportunities in development education and related areas such as global learning, global citizenship, global education and education for sustainable development for the Centre;
Produce appropriate research papers and academic articles on development education and related fields;
Line manage appropriate Centre staff;
Oversee and support the professional development of Centre staff.
Role and Responsibilities
Teaching
Contribute to the teaching on the Masters programme in Development Education and Global Learning with the aim of becoming Programme Leader in September 2017;
Contribute to other masters’ programmes as and when requested;
Contribute to appropriate UCL undergraduate degree programmes as and when requested;
Undertake supervision of doctoral research students
Research
Overall responsibility for the management of identified research and consultancy programmes
Identify and securing funding for new research and consultancy projects.
Promote and encourage further research on development education and related areas within UCL and more widely within higher education.
To actively follow and promote UCL policies, including Equal Opportunities and Race Equality policies.
To maintain an awareness and observation of fire and health and safety regulations.
To carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade and purpose of the post.

As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and amended in consultation with the postholder.
In undertaking these responsibilities, you will be line managed by Douglas Bourn, and ultimately accountable to the Clare Brooksand the Director of the IOE.
Selection Criteria
Essential
Education and Experience
- Detailed knowledge of the field of development education and related areas is required
- A higher degree, preferably a doctorate, in related field to the work of Centre
- The ability to teach successfully at a higher education level and experience of teaching masters students and doctoral students.
- Evidence of academic scholarship in the field including articles in peer reviewed journals, book chapters, books or relevant research reports in the field relevant to the Centre.
- Experience of securing funding for research and consultancy from national and international bodies
- Proven track record in managing research and consultancy projects.
Personal Style, Skills and Qualities
- Communication, both verbal and written, and interpersonal skills appropriate for teaching, supervision and collaborative work
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable in approach to work and proven experience of work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Evidence of commitment to personal learning, academic and professional development
- Understanding of and ability to manage financial aspects of projects and programmes and responsibility for budgets.

12. Experience of managing a research centre in higher education
The Appointment
The appointment is available from 1 December 2016for twelve months in the first instance.
Annual salary will be on Grade 8, in the range £41,844 to £49,362inclusive £2,948 London Allowance per annum.
This position is available as a job share at 0.6fte.
