TOPIC: CP/HIE litigation is bankrupting the public health sector and making private obstetricians uninsurable. SAMLA Western Cape have taken it upon themselves to host a comprehensive 2-day Seminar on this subject (See below for Day 1 & 2). Our aim is to not only give factual information about this dire state of affairs, but also propose solutions that will be debated and presented to various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, Indemnity Insurers, The Office of Health Standards Compliance, Denosa, Teaching Universities and Medical schools.

On the 8th of September 2017 we will host the 3rd day of this seminar focusing on 1) Case Management of the Child with Cerebral Palsy; 2) Damages suffered by the mother after a traumatic birth; and 3) Debate whether the current means of calculating future hospital and medical expenses is appropriate. Prof Michael Pepper, Professor in the Department of Immunology, University of Pretoria and Genetic Medicine and Development in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Geneva. Prof Pepper will discuss his latest research project on CP cases.

Kath Megaw, Paediatric Dietician. She has been published in the Epilepsia journal on the use of the paediatric ketogenic diet in third-world settings. She will discuss how ketogenic diets can reduce the incidence and severity of seizures.

Rowan Haarhof, Manager of the business at Munro Forensic Actuaries – will discuss Medical Inflation

Elsje Scheffler, Physiotherapist – will discuss the needs of the CP child and will also discuss mobility options for the CP child with Eugene Rossouw, Orthotist and Prosthetist, and SAMLA WC Secretary.

Corina Avni, pelvic Floor Physiotherapist and Marlene Wasserman, Sexologist will speak on the fallout suffered by the mother after a traumatic birth.

We are in the process of arranging for an Occupational Therapist and a Speech Therapist to give a presentation on the subject.
