1. Feedback on Career Ladders:

  • Good to see that they have been involved in other colleges’ pathways processes and implementation.
  • Question: How do we implement. It’s a tough thing getting the total college involved. Turf wars over majors, programs, etc.
  • Concern: Need faculty buy-in and there is little buy-in.
  • Kinesiology does pathways on a smaller scale. How do they streamline what they do and improve upon it using the Pathways model.
  • Can we ask different questions in the first part of Day 1, part 1?
  • Student Success milestones: What should they be? When do they take place? How?
  • How do you put a student in a meta-major when their career goal is not their area of study (ex: kinesiology student that wants to be a teacher).
  • One pathway for Basic Skills students?
  • Broader pathway for those undecided students?
  • What has CLP experiences been with guided pathways and STEM? What are the pitfalls and hurdles we might face? What are some potential solutions?
  • Intrusive counseling – is it expensive?
  • What are the best practices to retain students into Year 2 and beyond?
  • How do we deal with/ work with part time students?
  • What changes in curriculum need to take place? Can we adjust certain classes in student’s course of study to include a career exploration component? Should it be in every class? What institutional changes need to take place?
  • Predictable schedules?
  • Build mandatory orientations with career exploration components into it?
  • With concurrent enrollment, we could do career explorations component at the high school level.

2. Marla gave presentation on proposed STEM pathway they will begin to pilot this coming year

(2017-18). We need to send strategic invitations to those we want to attract – early outreach to get into our program.

3. What do we want our leadership structure to be at Gavilan?

  • Committee – go through academic senate to establish committee.
  • Workgroups are formed that report to committee
  • If we are a taskforce, then we don’t need by-laws. However we need to be officially recognized by the college.
  • Go to Senate for approval
  • Senate provides direction; build what we have
  • Look campus wide for changes.

4. Marla Dresch and Kathleen Moberg volunteered to be part of the task force, leadership committee.
