Enabling the Learning and Assessment of Others in Social Work - Stage 1.

Stage 1 of the module seeks to provide candidates with the necessary knowledge and skills to support both undergraduate and postgraduate social work students in their first practice learning opportunity.

Candidates would need to successfully complete the module at Stage1 in order to meet the requirements set by TCSW 2012 and is a prerequisite for applying for Stage 2 of the programme.

As we are taking a combined approach to the delivery of the 2 stages, candidates looking to work with a student on their last practice learning opportunity (placement) will need to discuss this with our Placement Coordinators; Karen Budd and Adrienne Finch.

On acceptance,we will be offering an additional session that will focus on elements of the Enabling Others Stage 2 in order to consider the more theoretical, reflective and critical approaches in practice learning.

Module Expectations:

Candidates will have a social work qualification, be registered with the HCPC and have a minimum of 2 years post qualifying experience or

Candidates working in the social care field, who hold a related allied qualification and have a minimum of 2 years practice experience

Candidates must agree to have a student on either their 70 or 100 day Practice Learning Opportunity (placement)

Candidates must have full responsibility in supervising and assessing the student’s practice over the course of the placement

Candidates taking a Brunel student are currently able to undertake the Module at no cost.

Module Overview:

The module enables candidates to demonstrate competence in, and critically reflect upon, the first 3 domains of the Practice Educator Professional Standards as outlined by the College of Social Work (TCSW) 2012 as below.

Domain A - Organise opportunities for the demonstration of assessed competence in practice

Domain B - Enable learning and professional development in practice

Domain C - Manage the assessment of learners in practice

The module will aim to enable students to:

 Demonstrate a high level of capability in planning, organising, delivering, teaching and evaluating effective programmes for students undertaking specialist practice;

Create a challenging and supportive teaching and learning environment for a student and monitor their performance;

Critically monitor and seek to innovatively enhance their own performance;

Develop the knowledge and skills to enable learning, and assess practice, in a multi-professional context;

Critically evaluate their supervisory skills and analyse the influence of power and authority in supervision through observational learning and feedback of their practice;

Analyse theory relating to the education of adults learners;

Module Content:

The module seeks to provide candidates with the necessary knowledge and skills to support both undergraduate and postgraduate social work students in their first Practice Learning Opportunity.

The module covers:

Theory and practice in adult learning

Power dynamics and understanding with anti-oppression and anti-discrimination practice as educators

Induction, planning of learning opportunities and formal supervision social work students

Principles of formative and summative assessment

Direct observation of professional practice and principles of good feedback

Facilitating reflection

Managing students who may be underperforming or failing in the placement.

The programme will run thrice within the academic year 2013 – 2014.

The module consists of 6 days and starts at various times through the year to coincide with social work student placements, and across the academic year on a modular basis.

Module Assessment:

The module is assessed by the completion of a portfolio, which will directly relate to candidates working with a current social work student.

The portfolio will include:

A reflective commentary about the role of Practice Educator (up to 3000 words)

Feedback from an independent Practice Assessor on at least one direct observation of practice with a social work student. This tends to be an agreed supervision session

Reflection on the feedback from observational practice.

Produce a Portfolio of Evidence which includes practice placement documents, including midway and final reports, at least two direct observations of direct practice and supervision records.

Study whilst on the module:

The module provides a mixture of formal teaching, private study, time in role as Practice Educators and preparation for own assessment.

The module involves face-to-face teaching at the University over 6 days which needs to be arranged as study leave in advance with your line manager/employer.

Candidates would also need to agree to take, and confirm, a social work student, prior to the start of the module.

We anticipate that candidates will need around 90 hours of private study over the period of the module and whilst the practice learning opportunity happens. Most of this time is needed for engaging in the resources provided and identifying academic resources to support practice education within your specialism from the University Library.

Ebooks and Journal articles can also be accessed through the Online Library, which you will have full access to as part of the module on completion of the University Application Form (AR6), which is available to download.
