14.3 million children in the U.S. have no place to go when the school day ends. These afterschool hours are full of possibilities--and dangers. That's why it's important for kids to have a safe place to go after school where they can participate in healthy, positive, fun activities. Show your support for afterschool programs by being a part of Lights On Afterschool!. On October 14th, more than 6,000 communities will hold events to call attention to the need for afterschool programs that keep kids safe, help working families, and improve academic achievement. Training Opportunities Available to Nonprofit Organizations
The Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) has partnered with other Michigan nonprofits and national resource organizations to provide capacity building training in Lansing and Livonia this fall. Topics range from many aspects of fundraising to web development and volunteer retention.
MNA is also sponsoring the Indiana University Fund Raising School at Madonna University in Livonia, MI. For 25 years, The Fund Raising School has helped thousands of fund raising professionals achieve new levels of success. Courses include Principles & Techniques of Fundraising (Sept. 27–Oct. 1, 2004) and Preparing for Successful Grant Proposals (Dec. 1–2, 2004). National Preparedness Month
To Be Launched in September
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), The America Prepared Campaign, the American Red Cross, the National Association of Broadcasters and the U.S. Department of Education have joined a coalition of more than 50 national organizations to engage Americans in emergency preparedness by launching National Preparedness Month on September 9. The launch event will take place at the U.S. Capitol where all 56 state and territorial governors have pledged to mark National Preparedness Month with local events.
National Preparedness Month will provide Americans with a variety of opportunities to learn more about ways they can prepare for an emergency, get an emergency supply kit, establish a family communications plan, and become better aware of threats that may impact communities. It will also provide them with several opportunities to volunteer or get first aid or CPR training. State and local governments, individual communities, private businesses and nonprofit organizations will host events or promote preparedness steps around the country during September to encourage all Americans to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and schools.
