Mandatory Training

The requirement for appraisers engaged by HEW is to demonstrate their familiarity with up to date legislation and guidance on E&D and IG on a three yearly basis.

As a Service, we provide bespoke sessions at the annual conference on a rolling cycle to ensure that appraisers who attend can stay up to date without needing to do anything further. We covered IG for appraisers in 2014 and will cover cultural awareness and E&D for appraisers in 2015.

Any other appropriate training: on-line, in-house in other roles, or externally, can be counted but the Service needs a record of when it has been completed.

Free on-line modules from the RCGP, doctors.org, bmjlearning.com etc are all suitable, as are the LMC resources that can be purchased as a package for £30 by practices.

I know that some of you have asked for more specific details about possible modules to satisfy the need for E&D and IG as appraisers. Below are some of the courses that we would be happy with, but if you do know of any more please do let me know and I’ll share with everyone. What I don’t know is whether you will need to register, subscribe or what for these. Any feedback would also be appreciated on those technical issues.

The LMC also offer a package of various training, including Information Governance and Equality & Human Rights, any of which could count towards the appraiser requirements. Information follows from email from the LMC:

We have developed a series of training resources called ‘Lunch and Learn’. These are basically power-point resources with a script that are written by people with experience in this area and are aimed to be delivered by practice staff for practice staff.

So far, the resources we have are:

  • Information Governance
  • Equality & Human Rights
  • Adult and Children Safeguarding – Level 1
  • Chaperone Training
  • Dementia*
  • Emergencies in General Practice
  • Practice Nurse Revalidation*

* these are free if you wanted to go onto our website and have a look at them? may need to register if you have not been on our website before. (it is free to register)

Apart from the free resources, these are £30 per package and can be used as many times as you like. The idea is that they are used as part of induction or as multi-disciplinary learning with the whole team over a lunchtime in a practice.
