VANDEN HIGH SCHOOL
ATHLETIC CONTRACT AND POLICIES
Athletes, Managers and Statisticians:
In order that we might experience the benefits of a successful season and represent ourselves as we should, it is important that each athlete understands, from the beginning, what is expected. Participation in high school athletics is a privilege. That privilege is subject to regulation by the representatives of the various schools and districts of the State of California, California Interscholastic Federation. Each such representative has been appointed by the school board and acts on behalf of all students in the state.
The Athletic Director will review this Athletic Contract with all athletes/parents at the pre-season sports meeting.
ELIGIBILITY RULES
The regulation of high school athletic eligibility is taken seriously by the school administrators, Athletic Director, coaches and athletes. The requirements for eligibility are reviewed by administrators, coaches and athletic directors who are responsible for the athletic programs of our schools. The following requirements are:
1.Athletics shall be an integral part of the total education offered to students and shall be conducted within the framework of the educational program of member schools.
2.Academic performance of student/athletes shall be monitored closely to insure that athletic participation remains secondary to successful classroom experiences.
3.Eligibility to compete shall be monitored by member schools to insure competitive equity among schools.
In order to meet the foregoing objectives, requirements have been set which ALL students must meet in order to participate in athletic competition. Not every student or parent may agree with each requirement. However, the regulations do apply to you! Their sole purpose is to assure that each student/athlete is playing by the same rules and that enforcement of the rules is consistent and uniform among all participants.
The constitution and by-laws of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the Sac-Joaquin Section, the various leagues' school districts and the school's regulations have set forth eligibility requirements in detail. Copies of each are available at the high school for thorough examination.
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY
In order to participate in athletics a student/athlete must demonstrate satisfactory educational progress in meeting the requirements for graduation. In addition, the academic standard for the student/athlete is a GPA of 2.0 or above and no F’s. Any student/athlete who earns an F grade or a GPA that falls below a 2.0 at the quarter/semester will be declared ineligible.
If a student/athlete falls below this academic standard (2.0 and no F’s), he/she may opt to use probationunder the following conditions:
1.The student has a 2.0 GPA or better.
2.The student can have a GPA that is below 2.0, but can not have more thanone ‘D’ or one ‘F’ grade. Any student that falls below this academic standard will not be allowed to access probation.
- A student can access a maximum of two probation periods during their high school years (9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade). A student can access his/her second probationary period if he/she successfully completes his/her first probationary period.
- The probationary periods cannot be used in back-to-back grading periods.
- A student that was unsuccessful completing the criteria of their Academic Eligibility Plan must wait out five (5) quarters to access the second probation.
Incomplete grades must be changed to a letter grade before the student/athlete can be declared eligible. The letter grade will then be averaged with the student's other grades. The total must be at least a 2.0 GPA. Fall athletes will be held accountable for their grades during the previous Spring Semester. Intersession grades and other summer course work as approved by the superintendent or designee may be applied to fourth-quarter grades for determining eligibility.
If any of the foregoing is not completely understood, please contact the high school for further information.
