A graphing calculator is required.TI-83+ Calculators are available from the AHS math department for a rental fee of $27/yr or $3/month. Prob/Stats text is online (tri 3.)
Course Description: College Algebra is a review of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and basic math essentials for non-math/science majors in college. Probability and statistics will be at the end of tri 2 through third tri. Mathematical Applications – Discrete Math is embedded in the course.
Requirements: attendance, daily assignments, quizzes, tests, notes, participation.
Geometry and Algebra ll/Trig with a C or better.
If the prerequisite is not met, students are expected to enroll in Alg II, Geometry or vocational math for seniors. Students ever needing Calculus are encouraged to register for Pre-Calc.
Expectations: Learners are expected in class on time every day. Each student will start with 25 points; 3 points will be deducted for each unexcused absenceand 1 point per tardy. People with multiple tardies to class will be referred to the attendance office. Use of phone or non-permitted internet use during lecture will result in a loss of 3 pts.Consequence for cell phone use during test/quiz is a zero, with no option for a retake. Ask questions, seek help if needed or help others. The teacher will be available for help; use your class time. Please be respectful of others and school property. Interfering with the educational processes will not be tolerated. Use appropriate language. Be prepared, set high expectations and follow the SOAR matrix as determined by the Apollo Community.
Grades: A grading scale is posted in the classroom. Assignments are collected every day. Assignments are posted in the classroom and on the Apollo website. Working with classmates is encouraged. Activities, problem of the day, and 5 minute warm-ups will be used to informally evaluate learning and understanding. Individuals are expected to complete all assignments to the best of his/her ability. Late work is accepted for partial credit. At the end of the trimester there will be a notebook check and quiz. There are a few assignments and quizzes in skyward. These will have closing times. Student understanding will also be demonstrated in class by doing examples and participating in discussions.Students are responsible for learning.
Enrichment: Students are encouraged to participate in Math League, Knowledge Bowl, the American High School Math Exam, Apollo Math Contest and the SCSU Math Contest, becoming a tutor in Math, attempting additional problems from the text, improving test taking strategies, and studying for college entrance exams. Very limited extra credit is granted, set high expectations and work hard!
Dishonesty will result in a zero. Students may retake a test only after failing a test the first time. 60%, if earned, is the highest possible score on a retake. Do your best the first time.
