CHAPTER I

PATRIOT: REVEREND JOHN HARRIS, M.D.

Reverend John Harris, M.D.

1 2

John Harris was a patriot of the American Revolution, a Presbyterian minister,

1 3

a physician and surgeon, a member of the South Carolina Provincial Congress, a justice

4 86

of the peace and a farmer. It is evident that he perceived the needs of his flock and his

colony ( later his struggling young country ) and made every effort to meet them.

Born on Maryland’s Eastern Shore on September 29,1725 of Welsh parents,

He early felt the call of two professions, medicine and the ministry. In 1753 he graduated

2

From Princeton ( NassauCollege ) qualified to enter both. He was licensed to preach on

2

October 12,1753, and his first pastorate was Indian Springs in Delaware. In 1756 he

Returned to Maryland as pastor of WicomicoChurch in Salisbury and ManokinChurch

In Princess Ann, a ministry which lasted five years. During this time, probably around

1958, he married Mary Handy, the daughter of Colonel Isaac Handy and his wife Anne

7,8,9

Dashiell. ( Mary Handy’s pedigree chart can be found at the end of this chapter ).

From 1761 until 1772, John Harris was the pastor of Snow Hill Presbyterian

6

Church in Snow Hill, Maryland. This church has the distinction of being the oldest

6

Presbyterian Church in America, having been founded in 1683 by Francis Makemie.

In 1890 when the fourth building was erected the name of the church was changed to

Makemie Memorial United Presbyterian Church in honor of it’s founder.

Reverend Harris and his family moved from Maryland to South Carolina in

1772, sent there by the Orange Presbytery to establish a Presbyterian church to serve the

2

devout Scotch-Irish settlers in the Ninety-Six District. One of the stout Presbyterians

who was influential in bring him to South Carolina and who became his close friend and

2

supporter was Patrick Calhoun, father of John Caldwell Calhoun.

Between 1772 and 1784, John Harris established four churches in the Ninety-

2

Six District: Long Canes, Greenvale, Bulltown and Boonsboro. Simultaneously he

tended his flock as a physician and surgeon, riding many miles on horseback to treat

2

them, usually with medicines he had compounded himself.

During the same period he represented his district in the South Carolina

3

Provincial Congress and shared with other justices the responsibility of holding court

And dispensing justice when no judge was in the district.

When the Revolutionary War began, he assumed yet another role, that of patriot.

In the “ The History of South Carolina under the Royal Governor “, Edward McCredy

characterized him thus: “ Bold, enthusiastic, and independent, he was peculiarly suited

for those stirring times and labored as a true patriot to engender his own principles of

liberty in everyone he encountered. It was his boast that not a man in any of his

10

congregations was a Tory”.

Under his guidance his congregations rebuilt Ft.Boon, originally built as a

protection from the Indians, and retreated into it when the Tories from across the

2

Savannah River raided the countryside. Like everyone else, John Harris suffered

financial loss. His four small farms were scattered and difficult to defend; so he was

2

unable to prevent the enemy from pillaging his crops and driving off his slaves.

Not only his possessions were in danger, but Tory raiding parties were instructed

To “ Bring back that rabble-rousing preacher “. In spite of this he traveled many miles

on horseback through sparsely-settled country to treat his patients and the South Carolina

1

Militia. Sunday, however, found him in the pulpit with his gun beside him and his

2

ammunition around his neck preaching about the Prince of Peace.

During the Revolutionary War, Reverend Harris seemed able to summon the

strength of several men to perform his diverse tasks, but the end of the war found his

health severely impaired. After 1785 he rarely preached and treated patients only when

his son, Dr. Handy Harris, was unavailable. He died during 1790 or the early months

11

of 1791.

11

Mary Handy Harris survived her husband and was living with her son John

Harris, Jr. in 1800. She apparently died before 1810.
