What is Global II?

This course is a continuation of the world history curriculum that your son/daughter began last year in the 9th grade. We begin the course at about 1750 with the birth of what is known as the modern era. The course ends with the study of contemporary issues such as nuclear proliferation, the threat of terrorism, and global warming. Students will be studying the history and development of Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa through a variety of primary source materials. The course will culminate with the administration of the New York State Global History and Geography Regents exam in June.

As part of the honors curriculum the students will also be required to complete a research project that will extend over the course of the school year. The students will be graded each marking period on completion of specific tasks designed to make their research a success.

How are students assessed?

There will be two unit exams each marking period. These exams will be formatted similarly to the NYS regent’s exam. Quizzes will be given weekly to check for student understanding of material and preparedness for class. Participation and homework are also requirements.

Mid-term Exam in January.

How are grades calculated each marking period?

  • Unit Exams / 20% x 2= 40%
  • Quizzes= 40%
  • Homework= 20%

What can be done to prepare for in-class exams and the regents exam?

  1. Students can attend extra help sessions offered by myself on Wednesday after school. These sessions may sometimes consist of large groups, particularly the day before an exam, but they can also be a great opportunity for one on one review.
  1. In April, voluntary review classes will begin after school for Global History and Geography. These classes are offered twice a week and are taught by a variety of teachers from the Social Studies Department.
  1. Students will be taking a diagnostic exam prior to the beginning of the in class review. This helps to determine which content and skill areas will require the most concentrated review. There are *websites available that allow students to practice regent’s style questions. Students can practice on their home computer or may wish to practice at school on the computers found in the libraryor computer labs.

4. Finally, it is recommended that you purchase a regents review book for Global History

and Geography. Below find an example of one such book.

What can you do to help your child succeed?

  1. Check to see homework is being completed and that your child is currents with his/her studies.
  2. Provide access to current events.
  3. Discuss current events with your child.
  4. Provide a quiet place for study.
  5. Encourage them to attend extra help as needed. (Each Wednesday, by appointment and/or prior to quizzes/tests)
