Grant Development & Writing Retreat 2018

3-day Residential Retreat
Monday 10September – Wednesday 12 September 2018
Individuals or teams of up to three people may apply to join the Retreat. At least one team member should be a practitioner of health, public health or social care working in England.Applications will be assessed according to the following domains:
- importance of the research idea
- appropriate research methods
- practicality and feasibility of the proposed study
- fit with funding stream (note that applications to NIHR streams should be prioritised)
- the study team (both the team members wishing to attend the Retreat, and the overall research team, with research teams given preference over individual researchers)

Section B:PROJECT DETAILS
Section B is your opportunity to tell us about the research that you are planning. We expect that your proposal will result in a competitive application to NIHR or other national peer reviewed funding scheme. Information about NIHR schemes can be foundon the NIHR funding programmes website here. Because there are limited places on the Retreat, there is likely to be competition for places so this is your opportunity to make a convincing case for the value, importance and feasibility of your project.

B3.Background and need for your research (no more than 500 words)
Explain the nature of the problem that your research will address. Include a description of the scale of the issue and its impact (e.g. to patients, the NHS and or society). How could the findings of your research deliver improvements? Summariserelevant research in the area.
B4.New knowledge (no more than 200 words)
Describe the gaps in knowledge and understanding that your research project willhelp to fill. Also describe the ways in which your project will enhance knowledge and understanding of an important issue in health or social care.
B5.Aims and objectives (no more than 200 words)
Set out the aims and objectives of your research project, including the main outcomes of your research.
B6.Research plan (up to 500 words)
We recognise you may not yet have made a lot of progress on the research plan; just indicate your thinking so far, however vague at this stage.
This section is for you to succinctlydescribe how you propose to conduct your research project. There is no set structure for this - you are free to describe it in the way that feels best to you. However, your account would normally be expected to include (but not be limited to) details of:
- the overall research design
- the setting for your research
- the research participants and eligibility criteria
- the intervention you will be investigating
- the comparator for the intervention
- the participant outcomes and how they will be assessed
- the main research data to be collected
- the project timetable
B7.Explain how you believe you/your team will benefit from attendance at the Retreat(no more than 200 words)
Section C:FUNDING DETAILS
The Retreat is free to attend for successful teams, however, given that places are highly sought after it is necessary to impose strict cancellation/non-attendance terms.
A fee of £350per researcher will be chargedin the event of non-attendance. You may find a suitable replacement from within your applicants’ team to avoid this charge. Please provide details of your host institutions finance contact/budget holder who is authorised to agree to this term (if more than one, please provide all relevant details).
