  • Identified the opportunity to establish a Business Continuity Management capability within Sainsbury’s based on IT disaster recovery experience gained over a three year period. Following presentation to the board in1994 funds were allocated for the plan to be trialled within the corporate headquarters initially, and has over the last 18 years evolved into a company wide programme which is now considered a normal business function and has been used to effect on over 60 occasions
  • Successfully managed the company rollout of business continuity plans,developing an awareness and education programme for all staff to enable the programme to gain speed and momentum. Initially launched to corporate headquarters covering 3,500 staff members and subsequently enterprise wide encompassing 150,000 staff. Business Continuity Management isnowembedded within the Sainsbury’s culture and is an integral part of new starter induction
  • Headed up the Business Continuity Management programme to ensure the smooth running ofSainsbury’s operations during the London 2012 Games. This involved establishing a ‘business owned’ risk register with clear mitigation strategies in place, which were effectively communicated and rehearsed by all key operational areas of the company. This also required close liaison with third parties including LOCOG and TfL
  • Actively contributes and supports the Business Continuity Institute, becoming a Fellowof theBusiness Continuity Institutein2000,wasthenelected to the Board of Directors in 2002. Has since been re-elected to this post twice most recently in November 2009. Elected by peers in2003 to the position of Vice Chairman and subsequently to the position of Chairman in 2004 and again in 2012 for a second term as Chairman
  • Brought around significant change to theBusiness Continuity Institute when appointed as Chairman.   • Providing a rolling three year strategy which safeguards the Business Continuity Management programme. Reviewing annually to accommodate corporate developments and business change, ensuring crisis response capabilities are appropriate and proportionate
  • Delivering ‘best practice’ corporate strategies for emergency response and alternate working arrangements via annual assessment against British Standard requirements
  • Liaising regularly with global corporate headquarters predominantly in Hong Kong and previously with USAandPoland. Providing support and guidance on their local Business Continuity plans taking into consideration local economic, environmental and social complexities
  • Working together with subsidiary organisations and critical third party suppliers to provide guidance and support on Business Continuity matters to ensure they are aligned with Sainsbury’s strategies and reduce risk. Including working with Sainsbury’s Bank and liaising with HBOS to ensure our product was in line with external regulations
  • Assessing and reviewing third party suppliers regularly, negotiating favourable terms for long term contracts and reducing costs where possible. Established a new supplier for UK wide recovery centres providing essential services, saving the company in excess of £75,000 a year
  • Reporting regularly to the board and other internal and external stakeholders on all aspects of the Business Continuity Management programme providing updates, results of tests, feedback and ideas for progress
