A RESOLUTION condemning the actions that led to the recent shootings in Arizona, praising those on the scene of the shootings who acted bravely and quickly to assist the wounded and to prevent more bloodshed, commending law enforcement and medical staff, sending best wishes to those who were injured, and sending condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed.

WHEREAS, on January 8, 2011, an armed gunman opened fire at a public event conducted by United States Representative Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Arizona; and

WHEREAS, at this event, a "Congress on Your Corner" session, Representative Giffords was attempting to communicate directly with her constituents and listen to their concerns; and

WHEREAS, six people were killed in the shooting and thirteen others were wounded; and

WHEREAS, those killed include John M. Roll, Chief Judge of the United States Court for the District of Arizona; Dorwan Stoddard, a retired construction worker whose final act was to use his own body to shield his wife from the gunfire; Phyllis Schenk, a great-grandmother, a gifted quilter, and a church volunteer; Dorothy Morris, who was traveling with her husband and enjoying what friends called a "fifty-year honeymoon"; Gabe Zimmerman, outreach director for Representative Giffords, who was doing his part to ensure that individuals were receiving the governmental support they needed; and Christina Taylor Green, a nine-year-old girl who had recently been elected to her student council, who was attending the event because of her interest in the political process, and who had often told her mother that she wanted to help children who are less fortunate because, in her words, "We are so blessed. We have the best life"; and

WHEREAS, in the shooting, Representative Giffords sustained a grave head wound, and the extent of her recovery is still in question; and

WHEREAS, several people at the event exhibited exceptional bravery, including Daniel Hernandez, Jr., a legislative intern who ran toward the gunfire to assist Representative Giffords; and Patricia Maisch, 61 years of age, who wrestled away the killer's ammunition, undoubtedly saving more people from being injured or killed; and

WHEREAS, a number of people at the event took action to apprehend the gunman and assist the injured; and

WHEREAS, law enforcement officers helped to stop the shooting, made sure that those who were injured received medical attention, and restored order at the scene; and

WHEREAS, medical first responders, doctors, and nurses worked selflessly to save and heal those who were injured in the attack;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives condemns and deplores the actions that led to the recent shootings at the "Congress on Your Corner" event held by United States Representative Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Arizona.

Section 2. The House of Representatives sends heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who were killed in the attack.

Section 3. The House of Representatives expresses its hope that those wounded in the attack will experience speedy and complete recoveries from their injuries.

Section 4. The House of Representatives applauds the bravery of those who prevented the gunman from taking more lives and who helped save wounded victims.

Section 5. The House of Representatives recognizes the service of the first responders who arrived quickly on the scene and of the medical personnel who tended to the victims once they reached the hospital.

Section 6. The House of Representatives commends the law enforcement officers who assisted the injured and who maintained order on the scene of the attack.

Section 7. The Clerk of the House of Representatives shall deliver copies of this Resolution to the office of United States Representative Gabrielle Giffords; to the members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives from Kentucky; to the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives; to the families of Judge John Roll, Dorwan Stoddard, Phyllis Schenk, Dorothy Morris, Gabe Zimmerman, and Christina Taylor Green; and to the Sheriff of Pima County, Arizona.
