JOB TITLE:Kitchen Aide
REPORTS TO:Direct supervision of Cook/ Indirect supervision of Principal
CLASSIFICATION: Kitchen Aide
POSITION:3.5 hours per day/ 9 months
SALARY RANGE: $11.81 per hour
FSLA:Non-Exempt
DEFINITION: Under direct supervision,performs basic food preparation duties in a correctional, residential, instructional, or similar setting. Also cleans food preparation areas, dining areas, and associated equipment as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is the entry level position within the Food Service Department. Incumbents perform a variety of food preparation and kitchen and dining area cleaning assignments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions).
1.Washes, slices, chops, grates and peels fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese and other food items according to the days menu.
2.Measures and mixes ingredients according to recipes, specific instructions, and established procedures.
3.Assists in preparing utensil/napkin trays and last minute preparations as assigned.
4.Cleans food preparation areas, dining areas, and associated equipment to include shelves, sinks, mopping floors and cleaning floor drains.
5.Receives payment for food, operates a cash register, and prepares deposits.
6.Assists with maintaining inventory and ordering supplies.
7.Operates various types of powered kitchen equipment such as choppers, slicers, mixers, and dishwashers according to established health and safety procedures.
8.Serves food by placing predetermined portions on trays or in insulated containers.
9.Consistently demonstrate effective problem solving skills.
10.Makes all job-related decisions based on the needs of the students and district based as identified in policy and by supervisor.

Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of
- Food preparation methods and procedures;
- Dining hall set-up;
- Fire and safety hazards related to food preparation, meal service, and operation of kitchen equipment;
- Health and sanitation regulations pertaining to food preparation; and
- Cleaning agents commonly used in sanitizing kitchen areas, dishes, utensils and equipment.
Ability to
- Read, write and follow oral and written instructions;
- Make simple arithmetical calculations to extend recipes;
- Safely operate standard kitchen equipment and appliances;
- Clean kitchen/dining areas including sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors;
- Serve meals using established portion control; and
- Follow recipes and food preparation directions.
Required Certifications and Licenses:Tuberculosis testing yearly,Food Handler’s card if required by State or Federal law
Experience and Training:
High School Diploma or equivalent (if none at time of hire – Must sign an agreement that states they will enroll in our Adult Ed program within 6 months of date of hire and complete the program within 1 year of date of hire)
High School Diploma or the equivalentMust be at least 18 years of age. Prefer one year of experience in food preparation and service. On site bloodborne pathogen safety training is required.

Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to work in a kitchen environment for long periods of time. Strength and stamina to stand for long periods of time. Dexterity and coordination to handle various types of kitchen equipment. Hearing ability in order to listen to verbal orders and instructions. There will be a lot of bending, reaching, squatting, and stooping to do minor maintenance checks on equipment. The manual dexterity and cognitive ability to operate kitchen equipment and prepare food under stressful conditions. Strength and ability to lift up to 50 pounds at times.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed under the following conditions.
Work environment is generally clean with exposure to conditions such assmoke, noise, moisture, steam, and fumes. Work is normally performed inside a kitchen environment where noise levels may be high. Disturbances from students/staff may be frequent.
BloodBorne Pathogens: An encounter with blood or other bodily fluids may occur in this line of work, you will be expected to know and follow the safety steps in the safety training provided. Preventative inoculations are encouraged; for employees covered under MCSD health insurance, this cost would be covered as a preventative measure. For those not covered by MCSD insurance, Mineral County Public Health Nurse offers many of these inoculations for a minimal fee.
