Goal:

Achieve a score of at least 75% in each of the required skills on IXL.com. This should take you no longer than 45 minutes per skill. The list contains a variety of skills that you will use and build upon through the 5th grade year. Come up with a plan that fits your summer schedule-you could work 20 minutes per day, complete one skill each week, cram it all in the last few weeks, or something else that works for you! 

Not much Internet access this summer?

Feel free to grab some math workbooks that match up with the skills on IXL! There is no penalty for this option!

Scoring:

This assignment will be included in the grade book and will count as the first seven assignments in “Math.” Each skill that does not have a score of 75% will drop your score byhalfof a point.

Due date: first day of school

Research shows…

Research shows that students who review during the summer perform better when school resumes in the fall. Practicing math skills over the summer vacation is important in developing life-long learning habits and maintaining the growth made the previous school year. Finally, with the ITBS test in October, students will be ready to perform to the best of their ability and earn a score that appropriately demonstrates their current knowledge. We appreciate your active role in helping your student prepare for the 5th grade, and we hope you enjoy a fun-filled summer break!

Here are a few ideas for those of you that are seeking the workbook approach to summer math practice. Please keep in mind that the idea of summer practice is to maintain the foundational math and problem solving skills as well as explore with a sense of ease…. since it is summer.

You get to choose which book. In fact, it would be great to have your child help make the choice to assist in the ownership of staying strong in math over the summer. Not necessary, but going to the bookstore is ideal, so you and your child can leaf through and see which book seems like a personal good fit. Maybe you’ll even find some good summer reading books as well:)

Also, please remember that assisting your child with correcting the work is expected and then your child will hand in the book at the beginning of the year to their new math teacher.

Take care,

Mrs. Roffey and Ms. Lane
