Course Objective
In this course, we will study the mathematical concepts addressed in the 6th grade Pennsylvania State Core Standards of Mathematics. We will examine how these concepts relate to everyday life, while building a foundation for later grades. Through a hybrid platform, students will work toward reaching their mathematical potential. The year will focus on the following units of study:
1) Fractions and Decimals 4) Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities
2) Integers 5) Geometry
3) Ratios, Proportions, and Percents 6) Data Analysis
Course Requirements
· Students are required to come to class on time and prepared to learn.
· Students must bring their pencil, binder, computer, headphones, and calculator (optional) to class daily.
· A 3 ring binder divided into 2 sections (Notes and Assessments) is required.
· A scientific calculator is recommended. Students will have one to use during class; however, a calculator might be needed to complete homework assignments.
o The TI-30X IIS is used in class and is required in later grades.
o There are simple scientific calculators available at the Dollar Store, free calculator apps, and free scientific calculators on the internet (Found using Google).
o If you are unable to purchase or access a calculator, please let me know.
Homework Policy
· Homework will be given 2-4 times per week, while projects may be assigned periodically.
· Most homework will be completed on EdPuzzle or Khan Academy, websites where students watch an instructional video and respond to comprehension questions.
o The goal is to have students preview information to prepare for upcoming lessons.
o Such assignments can be completed at home or during the 11th period resource time.
· Assignments may also consist of practice assignments to help reinforce and maintain skills learned in class throughout the year.
· Students MUST watch the ENTIRE video, complete ALL problems, and show ALL work on written assignments or comprehension questions requiring work to earn points for homework.
· Homework points are as follows:
§ 1 pt. = Student completed 100% of the homework on time.
§ ½ pt. = Student completed 100% of the homework past the due date.
§ 0 pt. = Student did not complete 100% of the homework assignment.
· Failure to complete 3 consecutive homework assignments on time will result in an academic detention (After school from 2:45 – 4:30). Prior notification will be given and students will have the opportunity to ride the activity bus home.
Tests/Quizzes
· Pre-tests will be given before the beginning of each unit.
o These pretests will be graded for correctness, while the goal is to use these pre-tests as a tool to help customize each student’s educational path.
· Quizzes covering several concepts will be given 2-3 times throughout a unit.
· A test will conclude each unit.
o Students that receive a satisfactory grade on a pre-test may be exempt from completing the post-test.
o In addition, students who are not pleased with their grade on a pre-test or post-test will have the opportunity to retake the assessment in order to show mastery.
· Students should use their note pages, online instructional videos, and quizzes to study for unit tests.
Grading
· Students will receive a grade based on the number of points earned divided by the total number of points possible for each marking period. Grades will include the following:

· A letter grade will be given on report cards according to the LDMS handbook.
Absences
· When absent, students are responsible for missed class work, homework, and assessments.
· Students can check Mrs. Scheckler’s website and Canvas for assignments and homework that they have missed.
· Any papers that were distributed will be in the “Absent” folder for the student to pick up upon their return.
· Students who have an excused absence will have a one-day allowance for each day absent to make up work, including assessments. Long-term absences will be handled on an individual basis.

What is Hybrid?
· This course is designed to include elements of a hybrid classroom, along with traditional teaching, in order to better individualize instruction.
· Students will use the traditional paper-and-pencil and math manipulative resources, while they will also use various forms of technology and online resources.
· In addition to whole group instruction, students may work in small groups, individually, or with teacher guidance as they participate in class activities and use the technology resources.
· Students may use technology to gain knowledge, practice skills, and display proficiency.
Technology Resources
· Students will access several online resources throughout the year.
· Canvas is an online platform where students can access lesson materials and assignments. During class, students will complete assignments using Canvas, while they can also log-in at home to access the resources for assistance with homework completion.
· Other online resources (accessible at home) that may be used include, but are not limited to:
o Khan Academy
o EdPuzzle
o FrontRowEd
o MobyMax
o Study Island
Technology Policy
· Students will be using touch screen laptops during class and will be accessing the internet to complete assignments and access resources.
· Students are responsible for handling all technology assigned to them during class with care.
· Students are only permitted to visit the online resources presented in an assignment.
· Students must also abide by all other aspects of the technology policy presented in the student handbook, found in the front of the student planner.
· Failure to comply with these rules may result in a loss if technology privileges.
