Artist Presenting: Picasso
Technique: Portraits focusing on realism and fantasy
The presenters will provide some background knowledge about Picasso using information on We will also show images of Picasso portraits to help get a visual of his work. The presenters will briefly talk about the standard (realism/fantasy) that will be taught for this lesson. We will show prints from various artists that will show realism and fantasy. Then, the teachers will make and take a Picasso Portrait that shows realism on one side of the face and fantasy on the other side. We will also provide pre-made Picasso portraits that can be used for other grades and different standards to show how this artist can be used across the curriculum.
We will make and bring with us the following Picasso Portraits to share. We will not teach these lessons, but will have examples to show how Picasso can be used to teach various standards.
K-4/K-5-/Math-During this lesson, TSW create their Picasso portraits using warm and cool colors. TSW look through magazines to find pictures of objects that are red, yellow, orange, blue, green and purple. TSW focus on things that help describe who they are as a person.
1st grade/ELA-During this lesson, TSW create a Picasso portrait that shows antonyms. We will also bring a portrait that shows the use of shapes during a Picasso lesson.
2nd grade/Math-During the lesson, TSW create a Picasso portrait based on a recipe that will be used with measurement. TSW follow the recipe to create their portrait.
3rd grade/Language Arts-During the lesson, TSW create a Picasso portrait from a lesson taught on abstract nouns.
4th grade/Science/Reading-During the lesson, TSW create a Picasso portrait on comparing and contrasting the seasons and explain why seasons vary at different locations on Earth.
5th grade/Science-During this lesson, TSW show how various animals adapt to their habitat/environment. The students will use their Picasso portrait to display in a gallery for others to identify the animal and its adaptation.

Vocabulary taught:
Portrait, self-portrait, half, realism and fantasy
The students studied the artist Picasso. The students used various materials to create a portrait to show realism and fantasy. The students had to show realism on one side of the face and fantasy on the other side of the face. Then, the students discussed and viewed art prints that showed realism and fantasy. The students viewed some Picasso portraits online to see his various styles. The students also looked at different genres to discuss whether the story was real or make-believe. They also wrote realism and fantasy stories about a top. We read a story during the week about a top. We learned real information about a top and pretended to have a magical top to show fantasy.
The students read the story “Snap!” In the story, the family had their portrait made by Mac. We also read a realistic fiction story that dealt with realism and fantasy. The students have been studying a list of amazing words such as; gallery, portrait, adult, childhood, depend, entertain, and scurry.
