Badminton Terms / Rules
Ace- A serve where the opponent fails to make contact with the shuttle
Baseline: The back boundary line at each end of the court, parallel to the net.
Carry: An illegal stroke in which the shuttle is not hit, but caught and held on the racket before being released; also called a "sling" or "throw".
Centre line: A line perpendicular to the net that separates the left and right service courts.
Forecourt: The front third of the court, between the net and the short service line.
Backcourt: Back third of the court, in the area of the back boundary lines.
Midcourt: The middle third of the court, halfway between the net and the back boundary line.
Let: A minor violation of the rules allowing a rally to be replayed. Ex. Serve hitting top of net and going over.
Rally: The exchange of shots that decides each point.
Serve: The stroke used to put the shuttlecock into play at the start of each rally; also called a "service". The serve is done underhand.
Types of Strokes:
Smash: A hard-hit overhead shot that forces the shuttle sharply downwards into the opponent's court. Also known as kill shot.
Forehand: The stroke used to return a ball hit to the right of a right-handed player and to the left of a left-handed player. Stroke where palm is facing forward.
Backhand: The stroke used to return balls hit to the left of a right-handed player and to the right of a left-handed player. Stroke where back of the hand is facing forward.
Drop shot: A shot hit softly and with finesse to fall rapidly and close to the net in the opponent's court.
Clear: A shot hit deep into the opponent's court.
Drive: A fast and low shot that makes a horizontal flight over the net.
Faults:(results in side out or score)
1. It is a fault during serving if the birdie is hit above the server’s waist or any part of the racket is above the server’s hand
2. It is a fault if the birdie lands in the wrong court.
3. It is a fault if the server or receivers feet are not in the proper service court during serve
4. It is a fault if the birdie falls outside the boundaries or passes under or through the net
5. It is a fault if the players’ body or racket touches the net
6. It is a fault if the birdie is hit twice in a row on the same side of net
7. It is a fault on the opponent if the birdie hit a player whether inside or outside the boundaries
General Badminton Rules:
1. Games are played to 21. Even score serves from right, odd score serves from left. Only serving team scores. Both Players serve to side out
2. Lines are considered in.
3. The serve must be diagonal and pass the opponent’s front service line.
4. There is only one hit allowed preside. Birdie may hit the net and go over during a rally, not serve.
Pickleball Terms / Rules
Double Bounce Rule: each team must play their first shot off the bounce. Example- The receiving team must let the serve bounce and the serving team must let the return of the serve bounce before playing it. After the two bounces have occurred, the ball may either be played off a bounce or volleyed.
Serve: Player must keep one foot behind the back line when serving. The serve is made underhand. The paddle must pass below the waist. The server must hit the ball in the air on the serve, not on the bounce. The service is made diagonally cross-court and must clear the non-volley zone. Only one serve attempt is allowed, EXCEPT of the ball touches the net on the serve. At the start of each new game, the 1st team is allowed only ONE fault before giving up the ball to opponents.
Faults:
a. Hitting the ball out of bounds
b. Not clearing the net
c. Stepping into the non-volley zone and volleying the ball
d. Volleying the ball before it has bounced one on each side of the net
e. Not serving cross court during
f. Serve is made above waist or not behind backline
Scoring- Only the serving team scores. A player who is serving shall continue to so son until a fault is made by his/her team. The is game is played to 11 points; team must win by two (2)
